At the Gate - Saturday
October 11, 2008
By Mike Dempsey VegasInsider.com
W e are only 13 days until Ladies Day at the Breeders’ Cup, and all of the preps are in.
Today’s $500,000 Queen Elizabeth Challenge Cup Stakes (G1) is the last Grade 1 race of the fall Keeneland meeting and perhaps a trainer might decide to wheel their runner back with less than two weeks off to go in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, but that would seem unlikely.
Both of Saturday's stakes at Keeneland came up intriguing.
The QEII drew a field of eleven and it is a wide open race. Ariege and Backseat Rhythm will vie for favoritism, but there are several interesting choices, including a pair of fillies making her second U.S. start.
Sefroua was third in the Noble Damsel Handicap (G3) in her U.S. debut and is sitting at 20/1 on the morning line.
Rosa Grace checked in second in the Lake Placid (G2) in her first start since coming over from Ireland and is 12/1 on the morning line.
I am going to give both of the fillies a good look.
The co-feature at Keeneland is the $200,000 Perrryville Stakes (G3). The seven furlong race for three year olds drew a full field of twelve.
I’m hoping to light up the toteboard with Amazing Results, who is 20/1 on the morning line. My analysis of the race is below.

Here is the opening race from Belmont Park to get our day off to a good start:
BEL Race 1 Clm $10,000 (1:00 et) #2 Strummer 3/1 #8 Lost Going Home 5/2 #3 Ferocious Won 7/2 #4 Lights of Broadway 6/1
Analysis: #2 Strummer drops into a softer spot here after a fifth place finish against NY bred Alw-2 optional claimers last out. He was 15 lengths behind the winner Rollers, who returned to win the $250K Gallant Bob in his next start at Philly on 9/27. The gelding was claimed out of his last start by the Brown barn that is 27% winners (with a +ROI) first off the claim and jams him in here for a $10K tag.
#8 Lost Going Home won for a $10K tag two back and failed to fire last out in the mud here against $12.5K foes. Last out was his first go for Guillo, who claimed him from Hushion two back for $10K. The gelding has won 6 of 11 in his career and is better than he showed last out. Just not sure if it was the wet track (which he has handled before) or the barn switch. If fits well here if he bounces back and runs to his previous efforts.
Wagering WIN: #2 to win at 5/2 or better. EX: 2,8 / 2,3,4,8 TRI: 2,8 / 2,3,4,8 / 2,3,4,7,8
Today’s Featured Race From Belmont Park:
BEL Race 9 Athenia Hcp G3 (5:15 et) #8 Social Queen 10/1 #3 Criminologist 6/5 #2 Criticism 8/1 #4 Waquoit's Love 9/2
Analysis: #8 Social Queen had a tough post and did not fire her best last out in a fifth place finish in a G2 at Woodbine over yielding turf that came up pretty salty. The winner was the tough J'ray and the third place finisher was Forever Together, who came back to win the G1 First Lady in her next outing on 10/3. She won back to back stakes three and four back in NJ and if she fires back to those efforts, she can pull off the upset in this spot.
#3 Criminologist appeared to be heading in the wrong direction but she bounced back with a solid effort last out taking the G3 Noble Damsel here over soft footing. She won this race last year over yielding footing. She has won 5 of 6 at today's D/S and looks imposing but can't get very excited about backing her at such a light price.
Wagering WIN: #8 to win at 9/2 or better. EX: 3,8 / 2,3,4,8 TRI: 3,8 / 2,3,4,8 / 2,3,4,7,8
Today’s Featured Race From Keeneland:
KEE Race 7 Perryville S. G3 (4:10 et) #12 Amazing Results 20/1 #1 I'm So Lucky 5/2 #4 Fidelio 3/1 #5 Eaton's Gift 8/1
LAnalysis: #12 Amazing Results goes turf to poly here after a good runner up finish in the $100K Lake Michigan last out over soft going. The colt stalked the pace, was boxed in traffic in the stretch and finished well when clear, beaten a length for the top spot. Two back the colt earned a career top winning the Forward Pass going seven furlongs on poly at Arlington. Two runners came out of that race to win next out including Shadowbdancing, who won the $75K Prairie Meadows Derby in his next outing on 9/20. He is certainly in a tougher spot here but he is 2 for 2 on poly and looks primed for a good effort here in his third start of his current form cycle.
#1 I'm So Lucky made a good late rally to finish third last out in the G1 Kings Bishop at the Spa, beaten 2 1/4 lengths for the top spot. The winner Visionaire came back to throw in a clunker in a seventh place finish in the G2 Jerome in his next start. The colt reeled off three straight wins before the Kings Bishop including his maiden score, which came over the poly here at the spring meeting. The colt owns a solid pace profile throughout and fits well here although likely to go off as the favorite.
Wagering WIN: #12 to win at 8/1 or better. EX: 1,12 / 1,4,5,12 TRI: 1,12 / 1,4,5,12 / 1,3,4,5,10,12
