There was good news and bad news over the past couple of days regarding the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

The bad news was Big Brown was retired after suffering an injury on Monday during a workout on the grass at Aqueduct.

The Kentucky Derby and Preakness champion grabbed a quarter and ripped off a chunk of his right front foot, eliminating any hopes of fans seeing a Big Brown-Curlin matchup in the Classic.

The good news is Curlin’s majority owner Jess Jackson announced on Tuesday that Curlin would indeed be pre entered in the Classic.

The 2007 Horse of the Year put in his first serious work over the Pro Ride surface on Monday in between the fourth and fifth races on the Santa Anita card.

The colt went five furlongs in 59:12 in a work rated as breezing.

“I’m extremely pleased with the way he worked and galloped out,” said trainer Steve Asmussen. “Carlos (exercise rider Carlos Rosas) let him gallop out a quarter mile and let him pull up. He was strong at every pole.

“I just checked him at the barn, and he seems good. He’s breathing well, and to this point we’re extremely pleased.”

The Breeders’ Cup is sneaking up to us quickly. While pre entries have to be in today, they will not be announce until Thursday, which will give us just over a week to handicap the races.

It’s a light day today. Belmont Park ran on Monday and is dark today.

Analysis: #6 Classic Gait is making her debut here for the Reed barn that is 15% winners with first time starters. The filly is by win early sire Mutakddim (18% winners with debut runners) out the stakes placed Bridal Gate ($101K) who has dropped four foals to race, a pair of winners, top earner Johnny Utah ($44K). Solid works on the morning tab including a bullet drill over the poly here on 9/20.

#5 Clique stalked the early pace from the outside and faded to finish seventh last out in her debut for Amoss, sent off at a chilly 13/1. The barn is better second time out, hitting at a 22% clip and this filly drops in for a tag.
