Haynesfield wins Count Fleet Stakes
January 3, 2009
NEW YORK (AP) -Haynesfield extended his winning streak to three races, beating Jess Not Jesse by 3 1/2 lengths Saturday in the $68,460 Count Fleet Stakes at Aqueduct.
Ridden by Ramon Dominguez, Haynesfield timed 1:44.65 for the one mile, 70 yards over the Big A's winterized inner track.
The colt earned $41,856 for the Turtle Bird Stable, paying $3, $2.50 and $2.10 as the 1-2 favorite. Jess Not Jesse, the longest shot in the five-horse field at 10-1, returned $5.30 and $3.80. Mike From Queens paid $3 to show.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Haynesfield passed two important tests in the first 3-year-old stakes of the season in New York.
The colt proved he could beat open company after facing New York-breds in the first three races. Haynesfield also showed the ability to rate and rally after a pair of dominant front-running victories.
``I didn't want to push him,'' Dominguez said. ``He relaxed nicely. When it was time to pick it up, he did.''
Fourth in the early stages, Haynesfield gained ground on the last turn before wresting the lead from Mike From Queens at the top of the stretch. Mike From Queens battled on before weakening in midstretch, finishing third to the onrushing Jess Not Jesse.
Pitched Perfectly was fourth with Aswaaq, the early pacesetter, the distant trailer.
