Mr. Fantasy wins Big A's Withers Stakes
April 25, 2009
NEW YORK (AP) -Mr. Fantasy made a strong run along the rail to beat This Ones For Phil by 1 3/4 lengths Saturday in the $147,000 Withers Stakes for 3-year-olds at Aqueduct.
The colt, trained by Kiaran McLaughlin and ridden by Richard Migliore, has three wins in four starts-all at Aqueduct. The only loss was a third place-finish in the Gotham Stakes to I Want Revenge, one of the favorites next week in the Kentucky Derby.
McLaughlin opted not to run Mr. Fantasy in the Wood Memorial, Aqueduct's final Derby prep, avoiding a rematch with I Want Revenge, who scored another impressive win.
In the Withers, Mr. Fantasy overcame an awkward start to settle in second behind Supreme Summit, the hard-to-handle pacesetter who drifted extremely wide on the backstretch. Mr. Fantasy took the lead turning for home, holding off This Ones For Phil, the 9-5 favorite.
``My horse broke in a bit of a tangle, but he's such an athlete he sorted himself out in two strides,'' Migliore said. ``He's got multiple moves. When I pushed the button, he just sprinted.''
The time was 1:34.91 for the one mile on the fast track.
Mr. Fantasy earned $90,000 for West Point Thoroughbreds, Donald Brooks and Nick Cammarano, paying $8.60. $4.10 and $2.50. This Ones For Phil returned $3.30 and $2.30. Gone Astray paid $2.80 to show.
Just a Coincidence was fourth followed by Supreme Summit.
