At the Gate - Friday

Thursday’s nightcap at Belmont Park was an interesting affair if you played the superfecta.

The top four finishers were posted on the toteboard as coming in 8-14-5-10. The only problem was #10 Dontquityourdayjob did not actually finish fourth, he really checked in ninth.

The race was made official with the wrong fourth place finisher, with the superfecta paying $1,073.00.

Close to three minutes passed before someone realized #13 Everybodywantsone was actually the fourth place finisher.

The New York Racing Association suspended paying off the race for 25 minutes while they sorted out the mistake.

The correct order of finish was changed to 8-14-5-13 and returned $800.00.

There was $111,978 in the superfecta pool, and no doubt there were probably a few horseplayers that might have thrown away their tickets after the race was made official.

If you wagered online, you might have seen a sudden infusion of cash that was suddenly taken away a few minutes later.

My top pick ran third in the race, meaning I was not even close with either the correct or the incorrect order of finish.

Here is today's opening race from Belmont Park to get our day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Alw $44,000N1X (1:00 et)

#8 She's Prime   8/1

#2 Lemon Punch   5/1

#1 Banker's Buy   4/1

#3 Submerge   3/1

Analysis: #8 She's Prime exits a NY Stallion series race on the turf where she tracked the early pace from the outside and faded to finish seventh. The race has produced a pair of next out winners including Mother Russia, who won a NY bred stake at the Spa in her next start on Sept. 5. The blinkers come back off today as she makes her third start off a four month layoff. She was competitive at this level early this year on the inner with a couple of seconds going a two turn mile. She has some tactical speed and the one turn mile may suit her running style and her 8/1 ML makes her worth a look here.

#2 Lemon Punch had a tough post last out and made a mild late run to finish fourth and two back was a fast closing second. Both of those starts came on turf and this will be her first start on conventional dirt. Bush adds blinkers to the mix here. Note she has lost at the Alw-1 level ten times but eight of those were against open company, just the last two against state breds. She has more of a turf pedigree but willing to give her one good look on dirt here and we might get to see her price drift up a bit here.

Wagering

WIN: #8 to win at 4/1 or better.

EX:  2,8 / 1,2,3,8

TRI: 2,8 / 1,2,3,8 / 1,2,3,7,8

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 9 Alw $44,000N1X (5:17 et)

#6 Freedom Rings   7/2

#2 Frivolous Buck   6/1

#1 High Cry / #1a Marula   3/1

#5 Wild Awake   2/1

Analysis: #6 Freedom Rings had to steady in traffic on the far turn and after coming six wide in the stretch ran out of steam, checking in seventh. The filly may have been ready for a regression off two hard fought photos two and three back. She came off a nine month layoff with a nose win to break her maiden, then was beaten a head two back at this level. She showed some promise as a two year old, checking in second and beaten just a neck in the Ms Grillo (G3). She bounces back here with a better effort.

#2 Frivolous Buck had some traffic troubles of her own last out and faded to finish tenth. She was a good second in a couple of starts over the turf here three and four back and her form went south in two trips at Saratoga. She has the look of another that figures to bounce back here with a better effort and she is in good hands with the Weaver barn.

Wagering

WIN: #6 to win at 3/1 or better.

EX: 2,6 / 1,2,5,6

TRI: 2,6 / 1,2,5,6 / 1,2,4,5,6

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Belmont Park

R1: #8 She’s Prime   8/1

R4: #8 In Perpetuity   8/1

R8: #4 Princess Maura   10/1

R8: #2 Catty Madeline   15/1

Good luck today!
