Crisis of Spirit gives Baffert 1 of his wins
November 1, 2009
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) -Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert saddled four consecutive winners Sunday at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting, including Crisis of Spirit in the $63,672 Anoakia Stakes.
Baffert's consecutive victory streak began in the first race with Freedom Star, followed by Total Bull, Crisis of Spirit and You Can Dream.
In the Anoakia for 2-year-old fillies, Crisis of Spirit wore down Well Deserved to win by three-quarters of a length under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.
Crisis of Spirit covered six furlongs in 1:09.39 and paid $2.80 and $2.10. Well Deserved returned $2.60, while Camille C was another 1 3/4 lengths back in third. There was no show wagering after Excellent News was scratched, reducing the field to four.
``It's nice to win with her,'' Baffert said. ``She's got a lot of improvement to do. Maybe someday she'll go a little bit further. Mike thinks she will. She's bred to be a champion, so hopefully she'll improve.''
Crisis of Spirit is the daughter of 2002 Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Vindication and the dam of Hall of Fame filly Silverbulletday.
The victory, worth $37,065, increased Crisis of Spirit's career earnings to $71,265.
Baffert, who won two races Saturday, took a 22-14 lead over John Sadler in the trainers' standings.
