Baffert, Garcia win again at Santa Anita
March 7, 2010
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) -A day after they combined to win the Santa Anita Handicap with Misremembered, trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Martin Garcia teamed up to win the $60,350 Joe Hernandez Handicap at Santa Anita with Sangaree.
Garcia, whose win in Saturday's Grade I Big 'Cap was the biggest of his career, led Sangaree between horses in the stretch for a half-length, come-from-behind win in a race that was moved from the turf to the main track because of overnight rain.
Baffert said the switch to Santa Anita's synthetic surface went exactly according to his plan.
``I'm glad it came off the turf,'' the trainer said. ``I would have scratched him if it would have been on the turf. He's real heavy, and he would sink right in.''
Baffert has been largely responsible for Garcia's sudden emergence as one of Southern California's top riders. Baffert bumped Misremembered's regular rider Victor Espinoza to put Garcia in the saddle Saturday, and after Sunday 15 of Garcia's 27 Santa Anita victories have come for the trainer.
Sangaree covered 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.28 and paid $10.20, $4.40 and $2.80. Gallant Son was second and returned $7.20 and $4.60. Stoneside paid $4.20 to show.
A 5-year-old owned by Darley Stable, Sangaree earned $35,730 for the victory, his fourth in 12 starts, for lifetime bankroll of $98,080.
