The Oakland Athletics hope Bartolo Colon can continue his recent run of success as they try to snap out of a rough stretch.

Trying to win three straight starts for the first time in over a year, the 39-year-old right-hander looks to help the A's avoid a fourth consecutive loss Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Angels.

Colon (8-8, 3.55 ERA) has not allowed a run over his last 16 1-3 innings after going eight during a 4-1 home win over Toronto on Thursday. He last yielded a run in the fourth inning of a 5-4, 12-inning victory over the New York Yankees on July 22.

"He's given us a bunch of quality starts," teammate Josh Reddick told the Athletics' official website. "You know he's going to throw strikes and put the ball in play."

Colon, who won 39 games over the first two of a four-year stint with the Angels from 2004-07 and was the AL Cy Young Award winner in '05, is 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA against them this season.

He'll take the mound trying to help Oakland (58-51) get back on track after it lost for the sixth time in nine games Monday. The 4-0 win for Los Angeles (59-51) dropped the A's one-half game behind the Angels for the second wild-card spot.

Jered Weaver tossed a four-hitter and Erick Aybar had three hits after missing two weeks with a broken toe to lead the Angels to a third straight win over Oakland.

Batting an AL-leading .348, Mike Trout added two hits as Los Angeles improved to 4-4 on a 10-game trip. Trout, who leads the majors with 36 steals, stole three to increase his club record to 27 straight stolen bases without being caught.

"He wreaks havoc out there," losing pitcher Jarrod Parker said.

Scheduled Angels starter C.J. Wilson (9-7, 3.27) is 0-3 with a 5.36 ERA in seven starts since winning at Baltimore on June 26, but he's 2-1 with a 1.67 ERA in four starts at Oakland. The left-hander allowed one hit and struck out seven over eight innings of a 5-0 victory there May 22 to improve to 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA against the A's in 2012.

Wilson, however, has yielded 15 runs and walked eight over 11 1-3 innings of his last two road starts. He gave up eight of those runs in 5 1-3 innings while not factoring in the decision of a 15-9 loss at Texas on Thursday.

Though Wilson leads the Angels with 122 strikeouts, manager Mike Scioscia and pitching coach Mike Butcher would like to see the veteran find a way to extend his outings by doing a better job of managing hitters.

"(It's) just trying to really get him a little more efficient with his pitches," Butcher told the Angels' official website. "I think when he does that, he'll get himself deeper into ballgames. His stuff speaks for itself."

Brandon Inge, whose only hit in nine at_bats versus Wilson left the park, had two of Oakland's four hits Monday.

It's uncertain if rookie Yoenis Cespedes will be back in the lineup after sitting for the second time in three games Monday with a sprained right wrist. The A's are 46-29 when Cespedes - batting .306 with 14 homers and 56 RBIs - starts and 12-22 when he does not.
