Preview: Mets (50-56) at Rockies (43-61)

Game: 3
Venue: Coors Field
Date: April 17, 2013 8:40 PM EDT

Conditions at Coors Field were not at all ideal for a baseball game, but it was the Colorado Rockies seizing the opportunity and the New York Mets buckling as the teams opened a four-game series.

After sweeping a doubleheader, Colorado will look to extend its five-game winning streak Wednesday night against New York.

The postponement of Monday's game - forced by a snowstorm - pit the teams against each other twice Tuesday, though the first game was also delayed two hours to allow for the removal of eight inches of snow.

Once the field was finally fit for play, it was the Rockies winning the opener 8-2 before erasing a six-run deficit for a 9-8 win in the second.

Jordan Pacheco's single with two outs in the 10th inning plated the winning run in the nightcap and gave Colorado (10-4) its second five-game winning streak of the season as well as its sixth consecutive victory over New York (7-6).

"These games are just grind-it-out games," manager Walt Weiss said as Colorado remained undefeated at home. "This speaks volumes about our club."

The Rockies have at least seven runs in four of their last five games - and both wins Tuesday came without the services of Dexter Fowler in the starting lineup, while Troy Tulowitzki sat for the second game.

Fowler took a foul ball off his left foot in Sunday's 2-1 win at San Diego, though he did strike out as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning of the second game Tuesday. Tulowitzki was held out after he was hit on the elbow by a pitch from Dillon Gee in the first game, though the damage wasn't believed to be serious. Tulowitzki also struck out as a pinch-hitter during the nightcap.

Jon Garland (1-0, 3.75 ERA) will look to benefit from Colorado's potent offense as he takes the mound Wednesday night. He's gotten an average of 5.3 runs of support thus far, but both of his first two starts since 2011 - he missed 2012 after undergoing shoulder surgery - came against the offensively-challenged Padres.

Garland yielded three runs on five hits over six innings in a 7-5 win at San Diego on Friday.

"With this lineup, you just want to go out and give the team a chance to win," said Garland, who is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in five starts against the Mets. "There are definitely going to be some bumps and bruises along the way, but if they continue to do what they've done it's going to put us in a good position."

Trying to limit the Rockies will be New York's Jeremy Hefner (0-2, 6.00). It could be crucial for Hefner to go deep as the Mets' bullpen may be thin after using seven relievers in Tuesday's second game.

But after a strong first start against the Marlins - he gave up one run on five hits in six innings - Hefner went only three innings in a loss at Philadelphia last Wednesday. The Phillies reached him for six hits and three walks, resulting in five earned runs.

"Command was the problem," manager Terry Collins said of Hefner, who threw 29 balls and 39 strikes. "If you get behind, you'll get hurt."

David Wright continued to show a liking for Coors Field, going 3 for 4 in the first game Tuesday and hitting his first two home runs of the season. He's hitting .385 with 10 homers in 31 career games there.
