Preview: Mets (63-73) at Yankees (70-64)

The New York Mets surprisingly slugged their way to their longest winning streak over the New York Yankees.

The Yankees, meanwhile, have matched their longest skid of the season and continue to be hit hard by injuries to key contributors.

Zach Wheeler will try to pitch the visiting Mets to a sixth straight win over the Yankees, who may be without Carlos Beltran on Tuesday night.

The Mets (18-19) are among the worst offensive teams in baseball with a .233 average, 26 homers and 4.1 runs per game. However, they broke out in a big way in the opener of this four-game crosstown series Monday, collecting 14 hits with a season-high four home runs to overcome a pair of three-run deficits to win 9-7.

That came a day after the Mets had 16 hits, including five doubles and a homer, to snap a five-game slide in a 5-4, 11-inning win over Philadelphia.

Eric Young and Chris Young have combined for 10 hits - four doubles - over the past two games, while joining fellow outfielder Curtis Granderson with a two-run homer each Monday.

"It was like a big party out there in the outfield, and it keeps you in the game," Chris Young said.

Granderson finished with two hits in his first game in the Bronx since moving to Queens via free agency. Still, it was only his fourth homer with the Mets, and he's batting .194 with 16 RBIs.

The Mets have won five straight against the Yankees (19-18), scoring 21 runs during three consecutive wins in the Bronx.

Monday's defeat was the third in a row for the Yankees, who have allowed 21 runs and 36 hits in those games. Already missing starting pitchers CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda and Ivan Nova, their offense could take a hit with Beltran's injury.

The veteran outfielder is expected to undergo an MRI after a hyperextended right elbow forced him out in the seventh inning Monday. Beltran is mired in a 5-for-43 skid, but ranks fourth on the team with 15 RBIs.

First baseman Mark Teixeira didn't start because of a tight left groin and right fielder Ichiro Suzuki and reliever Shawn Kelley were also missing due to their aching backs.

'That's what happens to guys that are older. You get bumps and bruises,' Teixeira said. 'But we have a very deep team. We have a bunch of guys that are champing at the bit to get at_bats. We have All-Stars sitting on the bench. So we'll fill in where we need to fill in.'

Wheeler (1-3, 4.35 ERA) looks to earn his first win in nearly a month as he makes his Subway Series debut. The right-hander rebounded from a poor performance with a strong showing Wednesday at Miami, allowing two hits over six scoreless innings before leaving without a decision in a 1-0 loss.

He a 3.27 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 22 innings over his last four starts, but owns an 0-1 record thanks in part to being backed by six total runs.

Wheeler is 0-2 with a 5.87 ERA in three interleague starts.

The Yankees have dropped five of the past six at home behind a 6.40 ERA from the rotation, and giving the ball to Vidal Nuno (1-0, 5.47) may not help.

The left-hander has a 10.22 ERA in three home games - two starts - and has completed six innings only once in four starts overall this season.

Nuno was effective against the Mets last season, yielding two runs over six innings in a 3-1 loss May 30.

Derek Jeter had a season-high three hits Monday, raising his career average to .432 at home in the Subway Series.
