Preview: Phillies (61-71) at Padres (62-69)

Game: 2
Venue: PETCO Park
Date: April 20, 2012 10:05 PM EDT

The Philadelphia Phillies have dominated the Padres in recent visits to San Diego.

Cole Hamels has certainly played a big part in that success against his hometown team.

With Hamels trying to win a fourth consecutive start at Petco Park, the Phillies continue a four-game set with the Padres looking to extend the longest active road winning streak by one team over another Friday night.

Despite another poor display at the plate, Philadelphia (6-7) continued its recent mastery of San Diego (3-11) during Thursday's 2-0 win.

Vance Worley struck out a career-high 11 over seven innings of four-hit ball as the Phillies posted their 12th consecutive victory at Petco - a team record for consecutive wins at one stadium. Philadelphia has won 23 of 27 at the ballpark since it opened in 2004.

Hamels (1-1, 3.65 ERA), a native of San Diego, has gone 3-0 during his team's road winning streak against the Padres, compiling a 0.38 ERA while allowing 15 hits and three walks over 24 innings.

After getting knocked around a bit in his season debut, the left-hander gave up two runs, six hits and struck out 10 over seven innings of Sunday's 8-2 win over the New York Mets. He settled in nicely after giving up both runs in the first inning.

"I think you put it behind you," he told the team's official website. "I think I've become very good at just getting over and starting back over. No matter what occurred, I need to get the next guy out. And I think that's something I've probably had to learn the hard way."

The Phillies, who have provided Hamels with just three runs of support thus far, aren't showing any signs of breaking out offensively. Philadelphia is 2 for 23 (.087) with runners in scoring position in its last three games after going 1 for 8 on Thursday.

While Juan Pierre and Shane Victorino went a combined 4 for 7, the rest of the team managed just two hits in 25 at_bats.

San Diego has also had difficulty getting things going at the plate of late. The Padres are batting .206 with runners in scoring position during their 1-7 skid.

Opposing Hamels on the mound will be Edinson Volquez (0-1, 4.24), who after allowing two earned runs in each of his first two starts, was tagged for four and issued five walks over five innings of Sunday's 5-4 walk-off loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The right-hander is surely looking forward to getting back home, where he's limited opponents to a .186 average and struck out 15 in two starts spanning 12 innings.

Volquez has recorded a 0.73 ERA and fanned 16 in 12 1-3 innings in winning each of his two career starts against the Phillies - both coming in 2008 with Cincinnati.

Hunter Pence is 3 for 18 (.167) with eight strikeouts against Volquez and Jimmy Rollins is 1 for 7. Ty Wigginton, meanwhile, is 3 for 6 with a pair of homers.

Following a day off, Cameron Maybin saw his struggles continue Thursday with an 0-for-3 effort. While Maybin has just one hit in his last 19 at_bats (.053), he is 6 for 19 with three doubles lifetime against Hamels.
