Already mired in a slump, the Detroit Tigers learned Monday they won't have Delmon Young for the next week.

The Tigers will try to overcome his absence by continuing their recent success against the Kansas City Royals during a rain-shortened series that begins Tuesday night.

Young was suspended for seven days by Major League Baseball on Monday following his arrest Friday on a hate crime harassment charge. The outfielder was charged with yelling anti-Semitic epithets during an early-morning incident outside a hotel in New York.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said Young, batting .242 with five RBIs, has no plans to appeal the ruling. He's expected to undergo a treatment program.

"An incident like this cannot and will not be tolerated. I understand that Mr. Young is regretful, and it is my expectation that he will learn from this unfortunate episode," commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement.

The suspension would only seem to add to Detroit's difficulties. The Tigers (11-11) have lost eight of 10 since their 9-3 start, which was capped by a three-game sweep in Kansas City.

Detroit's chance to add to its four-game win streak over the Royals was postponed Monday. That contest is scheduled to be made up Sept. 24.

The rainout, though, did give the struggling Rick Porcello (1-2, 6.45 ERA) another day of rest. The right-hander has given up a combined 14 runs over consecutive defeats after going 1-0 with a 1.84 ERA in his first two starts.

He was charged with five runs over 6 2-3 innings in a 5-4 loss to Seattle on Thursday.

Porcello is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in his last three starts against the Royals (6-15) but 0-1 with a 7.27 ERA in his last three matchups at Comerica Park.

Kansas City, which has won three of four following a 12-game losing streak, will counter with Luke Hochevar (2-1, 4.98).

The right-hander has had a pair of strong outings since getting hit on the left ankle by a line drive during a loss to Cleveland on April 13. He's allowed three runs in those starts, spanning 11 1-3 innings, and gave up two over 6 1-3 frames Wednesday against the Indians while helping the Royals end their lengthy skid with an 8-2 win.

"That was a huge start by Hoch," manager Ned Yost told the team's website. "That was a pretty darn good effort."

Hochevar is 4-4 with a 5.40 ERA in 10 career starts against the Tigers but is 1-0 over his last two matchups despite a 9.28 ERA. He's 3-2 with a 6.52 ERA over five career starts in Detroit but will face a team that's batting .211 over its last 10 games.

Tigers' pitchers have also posted a 5.68 ERA over that 2-8 stretch after putting up a 3.08 ERA in the first 12 contests.

Miguel Cabrera will try to help his beleaguered club by continuing his success against Hochevar. The Tigers' third baseman is 15 for 29 in his career versus the right-hander, who has given up 15 hits to one other batter, Cleveland's Shin-Soo Choo.

Kansas City's Billy Butler has collected the second-most all-time hits off Porcello of any batter, going 10 for 31. Former Minnesota outfielder Jason Kubel, now with Arizona, is 13 for 30.
