Preview: Twins (62-87) at Rangers (57-91)

Game: 1
Venue: Globe Life Park in Arlington
Date: June 27, 2014 8:05 PM EDT

While the Minnesota Twins have been unable to win on the road of late, it's been almost two weeks since the Texas Rangers won any where.

The Twins will try to avoid a ninth consecutive road defeat Friday night against a Rangers team that's looking to avoid its first nine-game skid in 11 years.

Since a 14-8 win at Oakland on June 16, Texas (35-43) has been outscored 51-23 during a losing streak that reached eight games with Thursday's 6-0 home defeat to Detroit. The Rangers haven't dropped nine in a row since May 30-June 8, 2003.

They've lost three straight at home, and 19 of 26 since starting 9-3 there. Texas hasn't won a home series since taking two of three against the Chicago White Sox from April 18-20.

'We know we're a way better team than the way we're playing right now,' shortstop Elvis Andrus said.

The Rangers did win three of four last month at Minnesota, where the Twins (36-41) swept a four-game set from the White Sox before losing all three at the Los Angeles Angels. Minnesota's eight-game road slide is its longest since dropping 11 in a row Sept. 9-24, 2011.

"All we can do is keep fighting," losing pitcher Ricky Nolasco told MLB's official website after Thursday's 6-4 loss to the Angels.

Minnesota's Joe Mauer is batting .414 with nine RBIs in his last seven games. However, he's 5 for 45 in his last 11 against the Rangers, and 0 for 6 versus starter Nick Tepesch (2-3, 4.38 ERA).

The right-hander went 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA in his first three starts this season and concluded that stretch by giving up two runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 7-2 victory May 26 to improve to 2-0 with a 2.03 ERA versus Minnesota.

Since that outing, Tepesch is 0-3 with a 5.79 ERA in his last four. After yielding two hits in 6 1-3 innings of a 1-0 win at Seattle on June 13, Tepesch gave up four runs and nine hits in five innings of a 4-2 loss at Oakland on June 18.

"I'm just trying to stick to the game plan," he said. "If I make good pitches, we can turn them into outs.'

Despite Minnesota's road struggles, Kevin Correia (4-8, 5.02) has yielded two runs in 18 innings to go 1-1 in his last three starts away from home. He's allowed two earned runs over 18 innings while winning two of three overall.

The right-hander gave up an earned run in six innings of a 4-3 victory over the White Sox on Saturday.

'I've made some slight adjustments and I've been steadily getting a little better, but I think the ball's just kind of bouncing my way a little more than it had,' Correia said.

He posted a 1.64 ERA to win his first three starts versus Texas, then allowed four runs in seven innings of a 7-2 loss to the Rangers on May 26.

Adrian Beltre is 1 for his last 9 with three strikeouts versus Correia. He's 2 for 19 in his last five home games against the Twins after going 12 for 23 with three homers in his previous five meetings at Arlington.

Minnesota rookie Danny Santana could be headed to the disabled list with a knee injury. In 37 games this season, Santana is batting .328 with two homers and 16 RBIs.
