GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) -Fausto Carmona showed good command while pitching three scoreless innings Friday. Joe Smith wasn't so sharp.
Carmona allowed just one hit during his impressive outing but the Cleveland Indians blew a three-run lead in the ninth against a Los Angeles Angels split-squad.
The Indians failed to score in their half of the ninth and the game ended in a 7-7 tie.
Cleveland shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera departed in the fourth inning with a sore left leg. He walked off after tripling, then diving back on a pickoff attempt.
``He had a little pain in his leg,' manager Manny Acta said. ``He did it diving back. We'll know more tomorrow.'
Smith surrendered a two-run homer to Michael Ryan and a tying RBI single to Ryan Mount in the ninth, setting up unbeaten Cleveland (5-0) for its second straight tie.
``It's spring training, so we left him in to see what he could do against a lefty (Ryan),' Acta said of the sidearming Smith, a right-handed specialist. ``In the regular season, the closer is in there and we'd have some lefties available.'
Mike Napoli had a three-run homer and a run-scoring double for the Angels.
Carmona struck out one in his first outing this spring. The right-hander, a 19-game winner in 2007, is seeking to bounce back from a poor 2009 during which he went 5-12 and was sent back to the minors for two months.
``He threw strikes and used all his pitches,' Acta said. ``That's what we want to see.
``We've stressed first-pitch strikes to the entire staff. We showed them actual numbers how the league does when guys throw first-pitch strikes.'
Indians starter Jake Westbrook yielded three runs before getting an out, but said he felt better than he did in his spring debut Monday.
``I felt 100 times better as far as mechanics and rhythm,' he said.
Westbrook missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery in June 2008. The right-hander also had right hip surgery in 2008 and said he gets some soreness in that area after pitching, but his arm feels completely healthy.
``If anything, I'm a little too strong,' Westbrook said after yielding four runs and four hits over three innings. ``I've got to back off and not overthrow.'
Angels starter Matt Palmer walked three in 1 2-3 innings, giving up three runs and three hits. Six Angels pitchers combined to walk nine.
NOTES: The Angels were led by Bobby Mitchell, manager of their Triple-A team in Salt Lake City. Angels manager Mike Scioscia was with the other split-squad in Tempe against the visiting Chicago White Sox. ... The Angels have 28 non-roster invitees in camp, most in club history. ... INF-OF Brian Bixler and C Mike Redmond each had two of Cleveland's nine hits. ... Indians rookie 1B-OF Matt LaPorta is being compared by teammates to Hall of Famer Yogi Berra - but not for his hitting. Both mangle English. Among ``LaPortaisms' uttered by him and written on a list in the Cleveland clubhouse is: ``It comes naturally to me. I just have to think about it.' ... The Indians have added a ``B' game against Cincinnati at the Reds' complex on Sunday.
