Game: 3

MIAMI (AP) - In the second inning, the Los Angeles Angels had two singles, two stolen bases and a walk - and still failed to score.

Then the clutch hits finally started to come. The last one was a two-out, bad-hop RBI single by Mark Trumbo in the 10th inning to help beat the Florida Marlins 6-5 on Wednesday night.

The Angels went 5 for 14 with runners in scoring position after going 2 for 26 in those situations in the first two games of the series.

``As the game went on we started swinging the bats better,' manager Mike Scioscia said. ``We had some good efforts tonight. It's obviously something we would like to see a lot more of.'

The Angels are batting .231 this season with runners in scoring position. Trumbo's hitting .226 in those situations.

``That has been one of the story lines around here all year,' Trumbo said, ``and I take a lot of responsibility on that myself. I've been pretty lousy lately. But you keep grinding it out, and every once in a while good things will come from it.'

Bobby Abreu walked to lead off the 10th against Burke Badenhop (1-1) and took second on a groundout. Trumbo came up with his third hit when his hard grounder took a high hop past shortstop Hanley Ramirez, and a sliding Abreu scored.

``I was looking for a bad hop, but not that bad,' Ramirez said. ``It was over my head.'

The Marlins have lost 12 consecutive games decided by one run, a franchise record. They are 2-20 in June, tying the franchise record for most losses in a month, and 1-2 since 80-year-old Jack McKeon took over as interim manager.

Angels right fielder Torii Hunter left the game in the fifth inning with bruised left ribs after he made a running catch and then hit the right-field wall hard. X-rays were negative, and the four-time All-Star's status is day to day.

``My whole inside shook,' Hunter said. ``It felt like Ray Lewis hit me.'

Abreu hit his third homer in the third inning, and Maicer Izturis also homered for the Angels. They won despite twice blowing leads and improved to 5-9 in extra innings.

``A lot of positives out there,' Scioscia said. ``The biggest one is coming away with the win.'

Michael Kohn pitched a perfect 10th for his first save in two chances. The Angels improved to 6-3 on their season-long 12-game trip, which ends this weekend at Dodger Stadium.

Ramirez, who began batting cleanup this week for the first time in his career, twice came through with a two-out RBI single. Trying to shake a season-long slump, Ramirez has consecutive multihit games for only the third time this season. The shortstop also came up with two defensive gems.

``You probably saw his best game of the year, maybe the last couple of years,' McKeon said. ``He was fired up and happy and coming over to talk to me about different things. The smile on his face, the new confidence he has - maybe he likes hitting fourth.'

Florida's Mike Stanton had three hits and scored twice.

The Angels' Joel Pineiro couldn't hold an early 4-1 lead. He allowed four runs in six-plus innings.

Los Angeles took a 5-4 lead in the eighth when Trumbo doubled with two outs and came home on Hank Conger's single.

The Marlins tied the game in the bottom half on a triple by Stanton and a single by pinch-hitter Dewayne Wise. But with two on and one out, Jordan Walden (1-1) got Emilio Bonifacio to hit into a double play.

Walden earned his first career win.

``Me being me, I didn't know that,' Kohn said with a laugh. ``And I threw the ball to a little kid in the stands. His first big league win and I threw his ball away.'

Izturis led off the third with his fourth homer to make the score 1-all. Erick Aybar and Hunter doubled, and Abreu made it 4-1 with a two-run homer.

NOTES: Florida RHP Josh Johnson (right shoulder inflammation) will likely make two or three rehabilitation starts before rejoining the rotation, McKeon said. The Marlins hope to have their ace back in mid-July. ... Florida RHP Ryan Webb, who has been sidelined this week because of soreness in his right shoulder, said he hopes to be available by Saturday. ... Temperature at game time was 89 degrees. ... On Thursday the Marlins will have their first day off since June 2. ... Angels pinch-hitters are 2 for 35 (.057) this season.
