MESA, Ariz. (AP) -Milton Bradley's spring training debut was cut short by an injury.

The Chicago Cubs new right fielder had a six-pitch at-bat Thursday that ended with a walk in the first inning of a 7-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. He then was lifted for a pinch-runner as soon as he reached base.

The injury was described as mild tightness of his left quadriceps, but Bradley said being removed was precautionary.

``You work out hard, you get tight,' Bradley said. ``I felt it before warming up. It felt tighter than it should have been. I felt the best course of action was to let them know right now. If it was April 6, I'd play.'

Bradley, who signed a $30 million, three-year deal in January, worked out after he was pulled and said he will be fine.

``I'll keep doing what I've been doing, nothing different,' he said. ``I'll get a good extra massage, get a good warm up and stretch and take it from there.'

Bradley, who is with his seventh organization this decade, was the club's biggest offseason addition after he hit .321 for the Texas Rangers. Bradley established career highs for home runs (21) and RBIs (77), while leading the league with a .436 on-base percentage.

``He told us running pregame that he felt a little tightness,' Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. ``We told him to get one at-bat and see what it feels like. We have a long spring, no reason to rush anybody. We will give him a couple of days and run him back out there.'

Bradley, who has had discipline problems in the past, says he will not change his style in Chicago.

``I am the same person I have always been,' Bradley said before the game. ``I just react differently to things, and know when to say something and when not to. You can say I change this or that and it sounds good, but really I haven't changed anything. I go out and play hard, and when you play hard and well, people seem to forget about everything else.

``It's about winning. If you look at sports, I feel the only way I can vindicate myself and justify all of these years is to go out and play hard,' he said.

J.J. Hardy had two doubles and an RBI for the Brewers, and Chris Duffy had two hits and a triple. Yovani Gallardo got the start for Milwaukee and gave up a hit in one inning. He struck out two.

Cubs reserve outfielder Joey Gathright is making the most of his opportunities while Kosuke Fukudome is training with Japan for the World Baseball Classic.

Gathright, a speedy free-agent outfielder, had three hits and an RBI, and scored a run and stole a base for Chicago.

``(Gathright) used his speed and stayed inside the ball well to left field,' Piniella said. ``We like the fact that he can play all three outfield positions and give you speed off the bench. He has three or four years in the big leagues so he has experience.'

First baseman Jake Fox hit a three-run home run off reliever Seth McClung, who gave up four runs, as the Cubs took advantage of nine walks. McClung walked four in 1 2-3 innings.
