PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Brandon League didn't help his chances for securing the Seattle Mariners' closer job while David Ardsma is out.

League failed to hold a one-run lead in the ninth inning Friday, and the Mariners lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-5 Friday.

League gave up four runs - two earned - on one hit, three walks and a wild pitch. League allowed the first five Arizona batters he faced to reach base.

``That's just the situation we're in with our bullpen, with all the uncertainty and obviously all the competition. There's so many roles open right now,' Mariners manager Eric Wedge said, remaining noncommittal about who would close with Aardsma still rehabilitating from hip surgery.

The Mariners loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but didn't score.

The Diamondbacks got two hits each from former Mariner Willie Bloomquist, who got a round of applause before his first at-bat, Tony Abreu and late-inning replacement David Winfree.

For Seattle, Milton Bradley hit a two-run home run in the third inning and infielder Luis Rodriguez, a Mariners roster hopeful, hit a solo home run in the second.

Mariners starter Jason Vargas surrendered three runs on seven hits in five innings, his first runs in three starts. The Diamondbacks pushed across three runs in the fifth off Vargas.

``They just hit some pitches early and I got some guys on base,' Vargas said.

Diamondbacks starter Daniel Hudson allowed three runs on three hits in four innings and struck out four.

NOTES: LHP Garrett Olson was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates, the club announced. Olson, who was with the Mariners for parts of 2009 and 2010, had a 5.40 ERA in five games for Seattle in spring training. ``He wasn't going to break camp with us,' Wedge said of Olson. OF Franklin Gutierrez was scratched from the Mariners' starting lineup Friday due to lower back stiffness, not the stomach problems he'd dealt with earlier in spring training. Gutierrez will likely play Saturday. RHP Doug Fister will pitch in a minor league game Saturday instead of starting against Texas. LHP Fabio Castro will replace Fister. LHP Joe Saunders (15.88 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Diamondbacks Saturday against Cincinnati.
