SAN DIEGO (AP) - As pitches go, it's one Arizona Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy wished he had back.

``I felt good but I made a couple of mistakes, including the one to (Nick) Hundley, and it cost us,' McCarthy said.

McCarthy had won two straight starts against the San Diego Padres but he couldn't make it three as Hundley's three-run homer was the difference in the Padres' 4-1 win on Monday night.

It was against the Padres on Aug. 26 that McCarthy (5-10) began an impressive roll. That started a stretch in which he went 3-1 with a 2.50 ERA in five starts. In his last 14 innings, he had been touched for but two runs.

But Eric Stults (10-13) allowed one run over 6 1-3 innings for his second straight win after breaking a 10-game winless streak.

Huston Street worked the ninth for his 33rd save in 34 chances.

McCarthy didn't have to work out of many jams with the Padres getting just eight hits and a run, other than the three runs coming from Hundley's sixth-inning blast.

``McCarthy threw a good game for us, actually,' Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. ``He made one mistake, the breaking ball to Hundley. We only put one (run) on the board. Of course, that didn't work out.

``He threw the ball like he did his last several outings. One breaking ball just hung and didn't get where he wanted to get it and Hundley hit it out.'

Stults struck out five and walked two in winning consecutive starts for the first time since July 9 and July 14.

Hundley has four homers, five doubles and 16 RBIs in his last 30 games.

The win was the Padres' sixth in seven games against the Diamondbacks at Petco Park.

The Padres had runners on in the second, fourth and fifth innings with none getting in scoring position. That changed in the sixth when Chase Headley notched his second hit and it was followed by Tommy Medica's single.

Hundley then smacked a 77 mph curveball from McCarthy which landed just inside the left-field foul pole on the Western Metal Supply Co., building's second deck. It extended Hundley's career highs to 12 home runs and 43 RBIs.

``About halfway down the line I thought it was foul and was hoping it would go fair, and it did,' Hundley said.

Arizona chased Stults with one out in the seventh on Cliff Pennington's double and a walk to Adam Eaton. Nick Vincent got A.J. Pollock to pop up to Headley at third and struck out Paul Goldschmidt on three pitches.

``He got a couple of fastballs by him and then a hard cutter,' Padres manager Bud Black said. ``He didn't pick it up out of his hand and had kind of a funky swing on it.'

In the first, Padres leadoff hitter Chris Denorfia singled and advanced to second on a groundout. Headley's single made it 1-0 and snapped the team's 21-inning scoreless streak.

Arizona tied the score in the second on Eaton's fielder's choice, which followed singles by Matt Davidson, Will Nieves and Pennington, with Davidson scoring.

Padres shortstop Ronny Cedeno was beaned by Heath Bell in the seventh inning and left the game.

Black said Cedeno was woozy and had a headache, but was not being hospitalized for an evaluation.

NOTES: Black said RHP Andrew Cashner (10-9) won't pitch again this season. Cashner, a converted reliever, has thrown 175 innings and Black said the team will skip his next turn, Saturday in San Francisco. ... Padres OF Will Venable was out of the lineup with an abdominal strain. ... Goldschmidt extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a first-inning double. ... Arizona LHP Wade Miley makes his career-high 32nd start on Tuesday in the second game of the series. ... Arizona RHP Patrick Corbin's final start of the season is this weekend against Washington. Corbin (14-7) has struggled lately, including Sunday's outing against Colorado when he allowed four runs and 10 hits in 4 1-3 innings.
