BOSTON (AP) - A questionable coaching decision took the Diamondbacks out of a possible big inning after Jake Peavy was out of the game.

Peavy held the Diamondbacks to four hits in seven-plus innings, but they had the potential tying run cut down at the plate in a 5-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night.

Trailing 3-1 in the eighth, Arizona had the bases loaded with no outs when third base coach Matt Williams sent Cliff Pennington home from second on Aaron Hill's single to left off Junichi Tazawa. Penningnton was nailed easily on a throw by Jonny Gomes, getting tagged by catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia without sliding.

``Well, you know, we're aggressive. (Williams) made a read. He's the guy on the baseline,' Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. ``It's his read. I make mistakes, Matty makes mistakes, players make mistakes, at times. We stand behind each other. It's just part of the game.'

With two runners on and still trailing 3-2, Paul Goldschmidt then struck out and Eric Chavez flied out to left to end the inning - and the threat.

It spoiled another good start by Patrick Corbin (12-3), who allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out six in six-plus innings for his second consecutive loss.

``I felt all right. I was getting ahead of guys and was giving up some hits on some pitches that were up,' Corbin said. ``I hit a wall in the seventh inning.'

Goldschmidt had a solo homer - his 26th - off Peavy.

Corbin had allowed one earned run in each of his previous four starts before giving up three on Saturday, bringing a 2.24 ERA - third-best in the National League - into the game. The Diamondbacks fell to 18-4 in his starts this season.

``He's run into a little bit of a drought at times,' Gibson said of the lack of offense for Corbin. ``But Peavy was good. He threw the ball well. We had our opportunities.'

It was Peavy's first start for Boston since coming over from the Chicago White Sox in a seven-player, three-team deal at the non-waiver trading deadline.

Peavy (8-5) struck out seven and walked two, giving up Goldschmidt's homer in the fourth and leaving with a 3-1 lead after a leadoff single in the eighth. The former Cy Young winner walked slowly from the mound as the crowd rose to a standing ovation, tipping his cap to the fans while crossing the first-base line on his way to the dugout.

Shane Victorino and Saltalamacchia homered for Boston. Koji Uehara pitched the ninth for his 10th save.

Boston made it 5-2 in the bottom half when Saltalamacchia homered into the Red Sox bullpen, where Uehara caught it.

The Red Sox, who lost the series opener on Friday, have won six of their last eight games to hold onto first place in the AL East.

NOTES: The Red Sox recalled RHP Rubby de la Rosa from Triple-A Pawtucket and optioned RHP Pedro Beato to Triple-A. ... Former Red Sox OF Cody Ross was held hitless in four at_bats after going 4 for 5 on Friday with two doubles and a go-ahead homer for Arizona.
