DENVER (AP) -Russell Martin took off Friday at the urging of Dodgers manager Joe Torre.

That well advised rest paid off Saturday night when Martin matched a career high with four RBIs to help James McDonald earn his first major league win, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 6-5.

``My timing was a little bit off,' said Martin, who went 2-for-12 in the team's three-game series in Houston that ended Thursday. ``I felt that I was rushing a little bit at the plate.'

``I used the day off to do a lot of work in the cage and on the tee just to make sure I am keeping my weight back and stuff,' he said.

Martin had two two-run singles, and Orlando Hudson doubled to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 11 games for the Dodgers.

``It was just that his execution hadn't been consistent enough,' Torre said of Martin. ``I was worried about it because he's a very intense kid and his approach is good.'

Torre was thrilled with the two pitchers he used to secure the win.

``McDonald battled to stay in there,' Torre said. ``(Ramon) Troncoso was pretty damn special tonight.

McDonald (1-1) gave up five runs and four hits, but walked four in five innings to win in his third start.

``It was nice to get that first win out of the way,' McDonald said. ``My fastball command was poor, but my command in my secondary pitches is starting to come around.'

Troncoso allowed one hit in four scoreless innings and earned his first major league save. Torre wanted to stay away from closer Jonathan Broxton, who had seen extensive work in the previous two games.

Los Angeles roughed up Ubaldo Jimenez (1-3) for the second time in a week. Jimenez gave up six runs and eight hits in four innings.

Jimenez wasn't around to discuss his latest disappointing outing. He has given up 16 earned runs in 12 innings over his last three starts.

``Ubaldo is not where he needs to be,' Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. ``The consistency isn't there and the fastball command isn't there.'

Garrett Atkins had a two-run homer and Brad Hawpe had two RBIs for the Rockies, losers of all five meetings with the Dodgers this season.

The Dodgers batted around, scoring four runs in the first. Furcal reached on a leadoff swinging bunt single, stole second base and scored on a two-out single by Andre Ethier. After James Loney doubled off the foul line in left, Martin drove in two runs with an opposite-field single and Casey Blake singled to drive in Martin.

``Anytime you get two-out hits to drive in some runs, it's a blow to the other team,' Martin said. ``It helps us and I'll take 'em.'

After throwing 26 pitches in the first two innings, McDonald threw 36 in the third, including one-out walks to Jimenez and Dexter Fowler. Smith singled to right for a run and Hawpe had a two-run, bases-loaded single to center, cutting the lead to 4-3.

Martin added a two-run single in the fourth. Hudson doubled, and Ethier and Loney walked ahead of Martin's single to make it 6-3.

Atkins homered with Todd Helton aboard in the Colorado fifth to get the Rockies to 6-5.

``Tough game for us,' Colorado second baseman Clint Barmes said. ``Those two pitchers of their kept the ball down in the zone and kept us offbalance.'

Notes: It was the third time in Hudson's career that he has hit in 11 straight. ... RHP Cory Wade (shoulder) and RHP Jason Schmidt will pitch in the same game Tuesday in San Bernadino. ... RHP Hiroki Kuroda continued to experience soreness with his strained oblique muscle. ... Clint Hurdle, a longtime Detroit Lions fan, approved of the choice of Matthew Stafford in the draft. ``I'm in with the selection,' Hurdle said. ... RHP Matt Daley made his major league debut. ... Colorado last beat the Dodgers on Sept. 14 last year.
