TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -Nick Adenhart worked three scoreless innings in the Los Angeles Angels' 8-1 victory against a San Francisco Giants split-squad on Sunday, making a push to possibly fill in for hurting ace Ervin Santana when the season starts.

On Saturday, the Angels announced Santana has inflammation in his elbow. The right-hander, who was 16-7 with a 3.49 ERA last season, might not be ready to start the regular season.

``We're going to push him back a little bit and see where he is in a week or so,' Angels manager Mike Scioscia said after Sunday's game. ``We'll evaluate it and see when he can start picking up a baseball, but we don't expect it to be anything that's longer term than, maybe, pushing him back into the middle of April.'

Adenhart, who struggled with a 9.00 ERA in three starts with the Angels last season, allowed two hits with a strikeouts against the Giants.

``This spring, his command has turned up a notch,' Scioscia said. ``It's great to see with some of the struggles he had last year with command. ... I think he's worked very hard over the winter and he's come to spring training with a purpose.'

Most of the Giants' regulars were in Scottsdale to take on Oakland.

``It's always good to be challenged and to feel that you're pitching against a major-league team,' Adenhart said. ``Maybe a couple of years ago it would have affected me, but not anymore.

``I look at the guys and see if I recognize any of them. It's not the main thing you're thinking about in spring training. You just try to get in your work and try to make good pitches.'

Juan Rivera and Reggie Willits each had two hits for the Angels.
