SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) -Kansas City Royals right-hander Kyle Davies wants to prove his strong September was not a fluke.

Davies looked as if it was still the last month of the season, when he went 4-1 with a 2.27 ERA, throwing three scoreless innings Monday to lead the Royals over the San Francisco Giants.

``I came down here saying to myself, 'Listen you did well in September, but that's one month,'' said Davies, who gave up one hit. ``This year is a long year. If you want to help the club, it's not having one good month, it's having a good six or seven months. I'm trying to prepare myself for that.'

Giants manager Bruce Bochy missed the game to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in San Francisco to repair tears in his labrum and biceps. He is expected to rejoin the club Tuesday. Bench coach Ron Wotus managed the team Monday.

Davies has thrown five scoreless innings in his first two outings.

``I didn't feel as powerful as last time, but my command was a lot better and my changeup was really good and I used it a lot,' Davies said.

John Suomi had four RBIs for the Royals, including a bases-clearing double in the seventh. Chris Lubanski went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to contribute to the Royals' 18 hits.

Scott McLain and Jake Wald homered for the Giants.

The two teams combined for five errors, leading to seven runs - five unearned - in the second and third innings. All three runs off Royals starter Horacio Ramirez were unearned in the third after Alberto Callaspo and Ryan Shealy committed errors.

``Horacio pitched much better,' Royals manager Trey Hillman said. ``If we play clean baseball behind him, he gets out of three innings with about 35 pitches.'

The Royals took advantage of errors by Andres Torres and John Bowker to score three runs off Giants right-hander Matt Cain in the second. Cain allowed three runs and five hits on 42 pitches in 1 2-3 innings.

Cain has allowed four runs and six hits in 3 1-3 innings in his two spring starts.

``I threw one curveball and it kind of hung,' Cain said. ``When hitters are more in a groove, it would probably be a pitch that would be murdered, but the other ones, I felt like I was where I wanted to be, going in or out. The triple (by Lubanski) to right was probably a little higher than I wanted it to be. It was away, just kind of up.'

Notes: X-rays were negative Monday on the left hand of 1B-DH Billy Butler, who was hit by a pitch Sunday. Butler's hand was bandaged and he did not play against the Giants. ... Royals OF Shane Costa, who had been held out the first five games after having wrist surgery last year, went 2-for-2. ...The Royals reassigned non-roster invitee C Kiel Thibault to the minor league camp.
