PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -The Marlins' Chris Volstad and Mets' Jon Niese each looked sharp in their spring mound debuts and Florida beat a New York split squad 4-3 in 10 innings Friday.
The Mets played without shortstop Jose Reyes, who was sent back to New York for further medical tests after it was discovered he had a thyroid imbalance.
Marlins outfield prospect Mike Stanton hit a two-run homer off Mets reliever Bobby Parnell in the 10th to give the Marlins the lead.
Mets new outfielder Jason Bay double to right to give the Mets a 2-1 lead in the third.
Niese gave up a run in 2 2-3 innings and struck out five. He walked two and gave up three singles. Marlins center fielder Cameron Maybin walked, stole second and reached third on a first-inning grounder, but Niese stranded him by striking out Jorge Cantu.
Volstad struck out two in two scoreless innings. He gave up two singles and did not walk a batter.
Niese was slowed by a hamstring tear after going 1-1 with a 4.21 ERA in five major league starts last year. He said he worked on his cutter Friday and is happy with his health.
``This offseason I worked really hard every day rehabbing in Ohio,' he said. ``I had a goal to be ready for when spring training started, and I feel good.'
Volstad struggled down the stretch last season after a solid start. He went 9-13 with a 5.21 ERA after having a 3.65 ERA on June 5. Volstad said he threw two sliders, a pitch he is working to add to his repertoire. One of those pitches struck out Jason Bay.
``I felt good. I was able to keep my stuff down,' Volstad said. ``I felt like I was throwing strikes.'
The new pitch does not mean Volstad plans to scrap his curveball, he said.
``It's just another pitch I'm adding,' Volstad said. ``I'm not taking anything away.'
Volstad said he enjoyed pitching in a game after throwing live bullpens and throwing on the side for the first portion of spring training.
``There's nothing like finally getting out there and competing again,' Volstad said.
Emilio Bonifacio homered in the seventh to knot the game at 2. Cantu made up for his strikeout with a two-out single off Niese to score Rookie of the Year Chris Coghlan. The run gave the Marlins a 1-0 lead in the third.
