MIAMI (AP) - New York's Chris Capuano finally fell short of his usual innings output.

The starter failed to reach the fifth inning for the first time in 27 starts this season, lasting only four innings and taking the loss as the Florida Marlins beat the Mets 9-3 on Monday night.

``It was frustrating. I could never settle into a good rhythm tonight,' Capuano said. ``The ball was kind of flat and up a little bit. I just really couldn't make that adjustment.'

Capuano (10-12) allowed six runs and eight hits, walked one and struck out three. He was replaced by pinch-hitter Josh Satlin in the top of the fifth.

Florida took a 2-0 lead in the first. Emilio Bonifacio opened with a double, took third on Omar Infante's sacrifice and scored on Capuano's wild pitch. Gaby Sanchez doubled with two outs and scored on Logan Morrison's single to center.

Jose Lopez homered on an 0-2 pitch with two outs in the third to make it 3-0.

Angel Pagan's RBI groundout in the fourth cut Florida's lead to 3-1. The Marlins responded with Bryan Petersen's RBI single and Bonifacio's two-run single in the bottom of the inning.

``Bonifacio with that hit to drive those two runs was kind of the killer for me,' Capuano said.

Mike Cameron had an RBI double in the fifth and Sanchez had a two-run single in the sixth to stretch the lead to 9-1.

Florida starter Javier Vazquez pitched seven solid innings for the win. Vazquez (9-11) gave up one run, six hits, struck out seven and walked none.

``The way he's throwing the ball right now, he's a tough at-bat,' Mets third baseman David Wright said of Vazquez. ``He's just accomplished so much a lot of it gets overlooked. I think he doesn't get the credit he probably deserves for the kind of career he's had.'

Jason Bay hit his 11th homer, a two-run shot off reliever Chris Hatcher, in the ninth. Bay went 2 for 4 against Florida.

``It's great for Jason; he's been swinging the bat very good,' New York manager Terry Collins said. ``I hope he finishes strong and goes to the winter time with a positive attitude.'

Notes: Mets 1B Ike Davis (left ankle sprain, bone bruise) took part in pregame drills as he and the team try to determine if surgery will be required. Davis has been on the DL since May 12. Mets LHP Johan Santana (left shoulder surgery) was scheduled to throw in the bullpen Tuesday before pitching in a minor league game on Friday. The team said there was a chance Santana could pitch for the Mets before the season ends. The Mets recalled OF Mike Baxter and selected the contracts of RHP Chris Schwinden and 1B Valentino Pascucci from Triple-A Buffalo.
