PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Kyle Kendrick is making a strong statement about being included on the Philadelphia Phillies' postseason roster.

Kendrick had his second consecutive strong outing, going six scoreless innings with no walks and four strikeouts in the Washington Nationals' 4-3 win over Philadelphia in 10 innings in the first game of a day-night doubleheader Tuesday.

Ryan Zimmerman's pinch-hit single in the 10th gave Washington the win.

Kendrick has given up three earned runs or fewer in each of his past nine starts. Over that span, he has allowed 13 earned runs in 53 innings.

With such a dominant starting rotation, including Cy Young Award candidates Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee, Kendrick would relish simply being a part of the group.

``I kind of realized a while back that my only chance is in the bullpen,' said Kendrick, who lowered his ERA from 3.22 to 3.04.

``It's their decision. We'll see. I'm hoping for the best.'

Kendrick has impressed manager Charlie Manuel.

``He's been good, very good,' Manuel said. ``He finds a way to get it done.'

Nationals rookie Tommy Milone was effective in his longest career effort, tossing six scoreless innings while setting career highs in innings (six) and pitches (93).

``He's got tremendous poise and mixes his pitches well,' Nationals manager Davey Johnson said.

``It puts him in contention to be a starter on this ballclub. We need pitchers like him. His poise is off the charts.'

Milone allowed four hits, and had no walks and two strikeouts.

``I was moving the ball in and out,' Milone said. ``It was actually pretty easy. Some days, you go in and out when you're trying to throw strikes. Today, it seemed a lot easier.'

Roger Bernadina hit a three-run homer off Phillies reliever Michael Schwimer into the seats in the second deck of right field in the seventh for a 3-0 lead.

``I was looking for a pitch and he left one out over the plate,' said Bernadina, who tied his career high with three RBIs.

Raul Ibanez hit a three-run pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the seventh to make it 3-3.

Tom Gorzelanny (4-6) threw a scoreless inning in the ninth for the victory. Drew Storen picked up his 39th save. Ross Gload grounded out with runners on first and second and two outs in the 10th.

The Nationals have won eight of their past 11 games.

The Phillies, who have clinched their fifth straight NL East title, used a lineup featuring only two regulars - Shane Victorino in center and Hunter Pence in right. Both were pulled by the seventh inning.

With the score 3-3, Washington brought in right-hander Tyler Clippard in the seventh and the Phillies called back pinch hitter Carlos Ruiz for Ibanez, who hit his 20th homer. It was Ibanez's second career pinch-hit homer, the other coming in 2001 for Seattle.

Michael Stutes (6-2) took the loss after allowing Zimmerman's single to center, scoring Michael Morse from second. Morse walked with two outs and advanced on a passed ball.

Philadelphia had runners at first and third with one out in the sixth before Ben Francisco popped out and Erik Kratz struck out.

The Nationals loaded the bases in the third, but Kendrick got Rick Ankiel to ground out to second, ending the threat. In the sixth, Kendrick got out of trouble again when he struck out Danny Espinosa looking with runners at first and third.

Notes: Wilson Valdez returned to the Phillies' lineup at shortstop after missing the previous 10 games with a left hamstring strain. The crowd of 44,263 marked the 201st consecutive regular-season sellout at Citizens Bank Park. ... Washington second baseman Danny Espinosa doubled in the fourth, giving him an eight-game hitting streak. ... Nationals relief pitcher Ryan Mattheus, who missed the past 22 games with a right shoulder strain, was activated from the 15-day disabled list.
