CLEVELAND (AP) - Derek Lowe had a night he'd like to forget.

The Cleveland right-hander allowed nine runs and didn't retire a batter in the fourth inning Friday night as the Baltimore Orioles rolled to a 10-2 victory over the Indians.

All seven of the hits Lowe gave up were for extra bases, including five doubles and two home runs. The 39-year-old veteran had a succinct assessment of his performance.

``The game speaks for itself,' he said. ``It was embarrassing, frustrating, all of the above.'

The Orioles broke the game open with a six-run third inning that was highlighted by Ryan Flaherty's three-run homer and Mark Reynolds' two-run double. Lowe allowed Jim Thome's 610th career home run to lead off the fourth as the veteran slugger passed Sammy Sosa into sole possession of seventh place on the all-time list.

Lowe (8-8) was pulled in the fourth after a walk to Adam Jones followed Thome's homer. He issued five walks (two intentional) and didn't strike out a batter. Lowe threw 82 pitches, with only 37 strikes.

``When you see a sinker baller getting that many fly balls, he's in trouble,' Indians manager Manny Acta said. ``He was behind in the count most of the time and he had to groove that sinker in the middle of the plate.'

Lowe was the Indians' best starter in the first two months of the season, but he's 2-7 with an 8.31 ERA in his last 10 starts. He has allowed 48 earned runs and 75 hits in 52 innings in that span.

``I have a lot of work to do,' Lowe said. ``You can't bury your head in the sand and think it will work out. You have to spend some time in the video room and analyze the good and the bad.'

Miguel Gonzalez (2-1) gave up seven hits in 6 2-3 innings in his third career start. The right-hander struck out five and is 1-0 with a 2.14 ERA on the road.

Asdrubal Cabrera and Jack Hannahan homered for Cleveland, which has lost six of its last nine.

``We couldn't do much offensively, but it was a big, big hole to climb out of,' Acta said.

Thome's homer into the right-field seats was his sixth this season and first since being acquired by Baltimore on July 1 from the Philadelphia Phillies for two minor-leaguers. He had signed with the Phillies as a free agent last winter.

It also was the 41-year-old slugger's 189th homer at Progressive Field. The left-handed hitter holds Cleveland's career record with 337 homers. He was a key part of the Indians' power-laden lineup from 1991 to 2002 and returned for the final two months of the 2011 season.

Ken Griffey Jr. is next up on the career list with 630 homers.

Thome had three hits, including his 449th career double, tying Hall of Famer Joe Morgan and two others for 97th all-time. He also struck out for the 2,526th time, leaving him 61 behind career leader Reggie Jackson.

``I've played a lot of games here, so it felt good,' said Thome, who exchanged a bat and two signed baseballs in return for the historic home-run ball. ``I'm most happy about winning the game. The key was getting the lead against Lowe. He's a guy that once he gets settled can be very good.'

Cleveland's only other bright spot came when left fielder Johnny Damon dove into the stands to catch Nick Markakis' foul ball in the third.

``When it went up it was probably close to being a fair ball,' said Damon, who also tied a season-high with three hits. ``The way the wind was going I had to check to see where the wall was. Fortunately for me, it was the low part of the wall so I was able to get up and get over without hurting myself too bad.'

Baltimore took a 1-0 lead in the first on a wild pitch by Lowe. J.J. Hardy hit a one-out double, moved up on a groundout by Thome and scored when Jones walked on a pitch that got past catcher Matt Wieters.

Cleveland tied it in the bottom half on Cabrera's 12th homer. Hannahan hit his fourth in the seventh to make it 10-2.

Right-hander Cody Allen replaced Lowe in the fourth in his big league debut. Allen walked the first two batters he faced before a run scored on a fielder's choice. He struck out Reynolds later in the inning. Allen quickly went through the Indians' farm system since being a 23rd-round draft pick a year ago from High Point University in North Carolina.

Allen is the second member of the 2011 draft class to reach the majors. Arizona's Trevor Bauer, the third overall pick, was the first. Bauer was sent to the minors this week.

NOTES: Closer Chris Perez, who hadn't worked since Monday, worked a scoreless ninth. ... LHP Rafael Perez, who hasn't pitched for the Indians since April 25 because of a strained lat muscle, could return next week. He's currently on a minor league rehab assignment. ... LHP Scott Barnes was optioned to Triple-A Columbus to make room for Allen. Barnes had an 8.10 ERA in seven relief outings. .. The series continues Saturday night as Zach McAllister faces Chris Tillman in a matchup of right-handers.
