JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -Jeremy Guthrie hopes to pitch better on opening day than he did Friday in the Baltimore Oriole's 9-7 win over the Florida Marlins.

Guthrie gave up six runs in the first inning. After he left the game in the fifth, he was told by manager Dave Trembley he'd be starting the season opener April 6 against CC Sabathia and the Yankees.

``He told me after the touchdown,' Guthrie said, smiling. ``He said, 'Nice job. We blocked the extra point on the touchdown.``'

For Guthrie, it will be his second straight opening-day start.

``It's real nice,' the right-hander said. ``Hopefully I can set the tone for the other four guys. That's maybe one of the more important aspects of it, to get us started on the right foot.'

The Marlins on Friday also named their opening-day starter: Ricky Nolasco.

Nolasco went 15-8 with a 3.52 ERA last season, and he pitched seven innings of the Marlins' spring-training no-hitter against the Detroit Tigers on March 22. The opening-day start will be his first.

``It's something I've been working toward,' Nolasco said Friday. ``It's something you don't get to do very often. There are only 30 guys in the world who are going to make an opening-day start.'

Guthrie, a first round pick in 2002, went 10-12 with a 3.63 EDRA in 30 starts last year. ``He's deserving of it. I'm sure he'll be ready to go,' Trembley said.

Guthrie has 7.94 ERA in three Grapefruit League starts. Pitching on short rest following his stint in the World Baseball Classic, he gave up a two-run home run to Hanley Ramirez and a three-run double to Cody Ross in the first inning before settling down.

``It was definitely Jeremy Guthrie from the second inning on,' Trembley said.

Luke Scott hit two home runs, Ty Wigginton went 2-for-4 with a home run and Ryan Freel had a pinch-hit two-run homer for Baltimore.

Nolasco pitched in a minor league game so the Marlins could use six relievers. There are three bullpen spots still open.

Right-handers Carlos Martinez and Brian Sanchez each pitched scoreless innings but everyone else was hit hard. Right-hander Burke Badenhop started and pitched a scoreless first before giving up Wigginton's home run to center in the second. He was charged with three more runs before exiting in the fourth.

Florida's Jeremy Hermida's homer in the eight tied it at 7, but Dan Meyer gave up a two-run homer to Scott in the ninth.

Gregg Zaun was shaken up when he collided with first baseman Wes Helms in the second inning and stayed in the game. Zaun had singled sharply to right and had to hustle to first when right-fielder Cody Ross tried to throw him out.

``Obviously you want all those guys pitching better but there's no panic yet. We've still got eight games to go,' manager Fredi Gonzalez said.
