TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -Hideki Matsui finally got the chance to play for the Los Angeles Angels.

Matsui made his spring debut on Tuesday, getting a single in two trips to the plate during a 6-5 win over the San Diego Padres.

The designated hitter struck out against Chris Young in the first and grounded Radhames Liz's 3-1 pitch up the middle for a hit in the fourth.

Matsui agreed to a $6 million, one-year contract with the Angels in December after spending seven seasons with the New York Yankees. The Japanese slugger hit .274 with 28 homers and 90 RBIs last year, then was selected World Series MVP despite starting only three of the six games against Philadelphia.

He was scheduled to make his Angels debut on Sunday but the game was rained out. Tuesday's weather didn't look good for a while, but the skies cleared and the game started after a half-hour delay.

``The chances looked pretty slim,' Matsui said through an interpreter. ``If that would have happened, (manager) Mike Scioscia would have called me the guy who brought the rain.'

Matsui said he needed about 40 at_bats to be comfortable at the start of the season. He said he felt good now, but had to remain cautious of his knees that bothered him in 2008 and kept him from playing in the New York outfield last season.

Young threw 46 pitches over three scoreless innings in his second spring start. He allowed one hit, walked one and struck out two.

Young went 4-6 with a 5.21 ERA in 14 starts last year before his season was cut short by a strained right shoulder. He had arthroscopic shoulder surgery on Aug. 17 and said he feels fine.

``I don't think about it,' he said. ``I don't notice it. It just feels good. The ball's coming out with life. I feel that if I'm healthy and make 30 plus starts, the stats would take care of themselves.'

Reggie Willits had a two-run single and Ryan Mount homered during Los Angeles' four-run sixth.

Anthony Ortega allowed one run and one hit in three innings for the Angels after scheduled starter Joel Pineiro was scratched because of a dental procedure.
