PHOENIX (AP) - Ian Kennedy didn't make it out of the fifth inning against his former Arizona Diamondbacks teammates.

In his first time facing the Diamondbacks since he was dealt to the San Diego Padres on July 30, the right-hander didn't last long in the game his new club would eventually lose 10-9 in 10 innings on Tuesday night.

Kennedy was long gone by the time Aaron Hill lined a game-winning single that scored Adam Eaton. Kennedy lasted only 4 1-3 innings, allowing six runs, six hits and a season-high five walks. He also hit a batter.

It was the most runs given up by Kennedy since he yielded 10 on June 6 against St. Louis while pitching for Arizona.

``It was difficult and I knew it would be a little different,' Kennedy said. ``You can never prepare yourself for something like this.'

Kennedy wasn't sharp, and he knew it. And the Diamondbacks took full advantage of it.

``I put myself in holes,' he said. ``I didn't make pitches and put a lot of guys on base. I'm glad I got this out of the game and know I will have to face them again this season.'

Hill didn't talk about himself or about Kennedy after Arizona's latest dramatic win.

The Diamondbacks played their 20th extra-inning game this season, second only to the 21 they had in 1999. Arizona is 15-5 in this season's long contests.

``A win is a win, and this was a total team effort,' Hill said. ``We keep battling back, and this is fun. It's great to see this team rewarded for good things.'

Martin Prado's two run double in the eighth snapped a 7-7 tie, but the Padres tied it again against closer Brad Ziegler.

Prado sent the game to extra innings when he backhanded a liner by Jedd Gyorko down the third base line with the bases loaded in the ninth.

``In that situation, you have to guard the line,' Prado said. ``You have to be careful and make sure you're in a position to make a play.'

Prado, who reached base four times with a single, double and two walks, has hit in 13 of his last 14 games with 21 RBIs. He has a career-high 71 RBIs this season.

Gerardo Parra had a career-high five RBIs for Arizona, and Heath Bell (5-2) pitched a perfect 10th inning for the win.

Eaton opened the 10th with a single to center, and Paul Goldschmidt singled to left. With Hill at-bat and runners on second and third, the Padres employed a five-man infield.

Hill lined a shot against Dale Thayer (2-4) over the head of left fielder Yonder Alonzo for his eighth career game-ending hit.

San Diego dropped to 7-6 in extra innings.

``No doubt, this was a game which had direction,' Padres manager Bud Black said. ``This one was hard to describe. The game is played by human beings and you never know how the game will play out. This game was a testament to that.'

The Diamondbacks entered the eighth with a three run lead and were up by two runs in the ninth, but couldn't hold on.

Arizona trailed 3-0 in the first inning, but Parra tied it in the second with a three run homer. He drove in two more with a bases loaded single in the fifth when the Diamondbacks grabbed a 6-3 lead.

Arizona starter David Holmberg also struggled in his major league debut. The first five hitters reached base and three scored.

Kennedy needed only 11 pitchers to get through the first.

NOTES: Padres 3B Chase Headley left the game in the fifth inning with back stiffness. . With Arizona, Kennedy wore number 31, but he had to switch to No. 22 because the Padres retired 31 for Dave Winfield. ... Arizona infielder Willie Bloomquist was named to the Arizona State University Sports Hall of Fame. ... Diamondbacks prospect Chris Owings was named Pacific Coast League rookie of the year. ... Since Aug. 1, Padres leadoff hitters are batting .411, tops in the majors.
