SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Jesus Guzman put the San Diego Padres in position to extend their winning streak and add yet another come-from-behind win. The good feeling did not last long.

Juan Perez hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and San Diego saw its seven-game winning streak end in Tuesday night's 5-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

``We're playing well, tonight too,' Padres starter Andrew Cashner said. ``We've got some guys banged up and we're still finding ways to win.'

The Padres fell behind 2-0 after five innings before solo home runs from Nick Hundley and Logan Forsythe tied the game at 2 in the sixth.

Cashner gave up an RBI single to Gregor Blanco in the seventh, but the Padres weren't finished.

``I threw the ball well, though there are a couple of pitches I'd like back,' Cashner said. ``The big thing for me was to keep the ball on the ground because the wind was blowing out.'

Guzman entered the game as a pinch hitter for Will Venable after Giants reliever Jeremy Affledt walked Forsythe. Guzman, who was 0 for 6 in the Padres' extra-inning win over the Giants on Monday night, crushed his second home run of the year, a ball that sailed over the center field fence.

``I was just looking for a pitch to hit,' Guzman said. ``In that spot it's my job. It was something we needed that inning.'

Dale Thayer (0-3) pitched the eighth for the Padres, giving up a run-scoring double to Brandon Belt and an RBI single to Juan Perez, which turned out to be the game winner.

``Dale missed a couple of spots,' Padres manager Bud Black said. ``The big blow was Belt. He left a fastball middle in. He fell behind and had to come in.'

The loss dropped the Padres back into fourth place in the NL West.

``Every game we lose is tough, this is more so because we just moved into third place,' Guzman said. ``This was a game we had to win. But in this park, it's hard to beat those guys.'

The wild finish was in stark contrast to the first part of the game, when San Francisco ace Matt Cain and Cashner were locked in a pitchers' duel.

``Cash hung in there,' Black said. ``I thought he threw the ball well. That was two good starters matched up in a low-scoring game.'

Cain had a season-high 10 strikeouts in seven innings and was charged with two runs and six hits. He retired 15 straight at one point.

Cashner scattered 10 hits over 6 2-3 innings and allowed three runs. He struck out six and walked one.

Perez, playing in just his seventh game since being called up from the minors, also made a key play in the seventh when he threw out Mark Kotsay at home plate after Kotsay had doubled leading off the inning. It was the fourth assist for the young center fielder.

NOTES: Padres' IF Everth Cabrera (left hamstring strain) is likely headed for the disabled list. Cabrera said it was a good idea to shut it down for a while and rest it. ... The Padres signed OF Ben Francisco to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Tucson. ... San Diego OF Carlos Quentin (left shoulder) sat out his fourth straight game but is improving, manager Buddy Black said. ... LHP Eric Stults (6-5) pitches the series finale for San Diego and has a 2.26 ERA over his last nine starts. LHP Madison Bumgarner (6-4) will go after his team-leading seventh win for the Giants.
