PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Jason Vargas was pleased with his spring training debut Sunday.

The Mariners' left-hander threw four perfect innings against the San Diego Padres and left after 50 pitches, leading the Mariners to a 5-4 win.

``I was around the zone. I was throwing the ball pretty much in the areas I was trying to throw it in so, it's getting work but at the same time, it's getting outs,' Vargas said.

He'd hoped to get to 60 pitches, but didn't need to do so.

The Padres, playing their spring training opener, committed three errors and had reliever Luke Gregerson allow two runs and four hits in an inning.

Jesus Montero doubled in a run off Gregerson in the fifth and Kyle Seager, the lead candidate to play third base if the Mariners open the season with leadoff man Chone Figgins in center field, singled and scored in the inning.

Seager finished with three hits, including a solo home run in the first inning off Padres starter Anthony Bass.

``He looks good. He's in great shape, he's stronger, he's moving around well,' Mariners manager Eric Wedge said of Seager, who played third in 42 of 53 games last season in Seattle and hit .258.

``That experience he gained at the big league level last year has really helped him as well as so many other of our young guys.'

Bass, a long relief or fifth starter candidate for San Diego, pitched two innings, and the only hit he allowed was the home run.

``I thought my fastball command was really good,' Bass said. ``I was locating inside and outside.'

The Mariners led 4-0 going into the ninth inning, but right-hander Jarrett Grube gave up three runs on two singles, a walk and a double.

With two outs and pinch-runner Cory Spangenberg on second, Seattle shortstop Nick Franklin lost a pop fly in the sun that dropped for an error and allowed the tying run to score.

The Mariners needed only two hitters to win in the bottom of the inning, however, as Mike Wilson singled and Johermyn Chavez doubled to left-center to score Wilson.

Notes: Padres LHP Clayton Richard threw 40 pitches in a two-inning simulated game Sunday and reported no issues with his left shoulder, which needed season-ending arthroscopic surgery in July. He's scheduled to start Friday's spring training game. ... The Padres elevated June first-round draft choice Spangenberg, a second baseman, to the major league roster with injuries to infielders Jason Bartlett and Logan Forsythe. ... Brad Davis started at catcher for the Padres after John Baker was sent home due to illness. ... Mariners closer Brandon League pitched a scoreless inning, and including intrasquad games, has not been scored on in three spring innings. ... The Mariners and Padres face each other again Monday with San Diego as the home team, and RHP Hisashi Iwakuma is slated to start against Padres RHP Dustin Moseley.
