PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -Russell Branyan has already proven he's comfortable hitting behind cleanup hitter Adrian Beltre. The Seattle Mariners' new first baseman has some good speed, too.
Branyan had three hits to raise his spring average to .357, then stole two bases and scored the tying run in the fifth inning as Seattle's split squad rallied to beat San Diego 10-8 on Thursday night.
``I thought we had aggressive baserunning,' Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said. ``A lot of that, too, is (first base coach Lee Tinsley). When a pitcher is 1.6 (seconds) to the plate, we're going to take that opportunity. Russell can run a little bit.'
Mike Wilson homered and drove in three runs while Mike Sweeney and Franklin Gutierrez had two RBIs apiece for the Mariners.
Ken Griffey Jr. went hitless in three at_bats and played four innings in left field in his first game in the outfield since signing with Seattle before the start of spring training. Griffey, who played five games at DH before Thursday, caught two fly balls and fielded three singles in his brief night of work.
``Everything feels strange,' Griffey said. ``Just strange.'
Branyan has felt comfortable since camp began. The veteran infielder, who split time at third base with Milwaukee in 2008 before signing with Seattle in the offseason, is tied for the team lead with four home runs and is tied for second with 15 hits.
The Mariners needed it against San Diego, which scored five runs in the first inning off Seattle starter Ryan Rowland-Smith.
Padres' starter Cha Seung Baek, a former Mariner, couldn't hold the 5-0 lead. Seattle scored three runs in the second, two on Wilson's fourth homer of the spring, added two more in the third and another in the fourth off the San Diego right-hander.
Baek gave up eight hits and six runs with six strikeouts before leaving with one out in the fifth.
``I liked the fact that he pitched into the fifth inning and we got his pitch count up to 82, which is great,' San Diego manager Bud Black said. ``He made a mistake on the pitch to Wilson ... but overall I liked his fastball, he broke a number of bats and got six strikeouts. I thought he was fine in a spring training game.'
San Diego first baseman Adrian Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with an RBI in his first game since returning from playing for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic. Scott Hairston (1-for-4) and Edgar Gonzalez (0-for-2) were also playing for the first time since suiting up for Mexico.
