PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - The Seattle Mariners are doing their best to get readjusted after their long trip.

Kevin Millwood struck out eight in seven solid innings and the Mariners beat a San Diego Padres split-squad 6-1 on Saturday night.

The Mariners are dealing with jet lag after opening the regular season against the Oakland A's in Tokyo on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Mariners are trying to avoid fatigue after they returned to the Phoenix area from Japan on Friday morning.

Manager Eric Wedge said he'll have at least some of them in the lineup for Sunday's game against Kansas City.

Wedge tried to give players time to overcome jet lag and stay awake during daylight hours, and had them come to the team facility with the option to work out Friday and Saturday.

``With the next four games we'll give them regular work. We haven't finalized exactly what we're going to do, but we'll get them back in there,' Wedge said. ``Obviously they're feeling it quite a bit (Saturday) and hopefully they'll be a little bit better with it (Sunday).'

The Mariners are back on their regular spring training workout schedule Sunday with players arriving in the morning for pregame stretching.

``We've had a pretty good plan with this all along and I expect our guys will respond to it,' Wedge said.

The Padres had at least five players in their starting lineup that are expected to make the 25-man season-opening roster.

Only one had good success against Millwood - first baseman Yonder Alonso, who had two hits.

Millwood gave up a home run to Andy Parrino in the fifth inning, but only allowed five hits.

``I felt good I was able to go seven and throw that many pitches and still feel like I had something left,' Millwood said. ``My curveball wasn't where I wanted it to be yet, but it's getting there ... it's normally the last thing that comes so I'm not too worried about it.'

Alonso increased his spring training batting average to .314 and hit his sixth double of the spring.

``He gets his hits,' Padres manager Bud Black said. ``He hits the ball all over. He does a lot of good things.'

San Diego left fielder Mark Kotsay left the game after three innings with a calf injury, but mainly as a precaution, Black said.

Rich Poythress had three hits for Seattle, and Daniel Carroll hit a solo home run off the Padres' Micah Owings in the seventh.

NOTES: Mariners 2B Dustin Ackley was sent home after feeling ill Saturday. Ackley has lost a few pounds, Wedge said, but will return to spring training headquarters for further evaluation Sunday. ... Wedge said the Mariners still have a couple of 25-man roster decisions to make in the coming days because the club must add pitchers Hisashi Iwakuma, Hector Noesi and Millwood to the roster after they were left off it in Japan. ... OF Mike Carp is day to day after spraining his shoulder in Japan. There is no timetable for the return of OF Franklin Gutierrez, who has been cleared to throw after suffering a partial pectoral muscle tear on Feb. 28, and C Adam Moore (broken wrist bone). Both are on the 15-day disabled list. ... Black said he'll pick the team's opening day starter Sunday, when the Padres play their Arizona spring training finale. ... The Padres re-assigned RHP Dale Thayer and C Brad Davis to minor league camp Saturday following the afternoon split-squad game.
