PHILADELPHIA (AP) - When right-hander Tyler Cloyd pitched five scoreless innings of relief on Aug. 24 in an 18-inning game the Phillies eventually lost, his club rewarded him by sending him back to the minors.

In his first major league start in three weeks Tuesday night, things could not have gone much worse for Cloyd. He couldn't make it through five innings in Philadelphia's 8-2 loss to the San Diego Padres.

Cloyd (2-4) was not sharp, allowing seven runs and nine hits over four-plus innings. He struck out four and walked none.

``I was leaving pitches up and made a lot of mistakes,' Cloyd said. ``My pitches were getting a lot of the plate. ... I got off the game plan and didn't throw enough off-speed pitches.'

Zach Miner, who relieved Cloyd in the fifth, let two inherited runners score and yielded three hits and a run overall. Ethan Martin, whose spot in the rotation was filled by Cloyd, pitched a perfect sixth in his first appearance as a reliever.

``Cloyd was pretty good for the first three innings, then he elevated some pitches,' Phillies interim manager Ryne Sandberg said. ``Martin was very impressive. He had good control, kept his fastball down and had good stuff.'

Jedd Gyorko and Chase Headley led the way for the Padres with three hits apiece to back a strong outing by Andrew Cashner.

Cashner (9-8) earned his first victory since Aug. 2, throwing 7 2-3 masterful innings while limiting the Phillies to four hits and a walk. He matched a season high with seven strikeouts and retired his first 11 batters before giving up a double to Chase Utley.

``He was tough and had good stuff,' Sandberg said. ``I had him in Double-A in 2009. (Cody) Asche, along with Utley, were two of a few guys who could handle him.'

Cashner had allowed just one run in his previous two outings but did not get a decision in either one. He owns a 2.72 ERA since the All-Star break and has eight quality starts in his last nine outings.

Gyorko, who entered in a 3-for-28 slide, scored three runs and drove in another. Headley added two RBIs for the Padres, who have won four straight and six of seven.

Philadelphia had won three in a row.

The Padres, who had 13 hits, struck early with Headley's RBI single in the first inning. They added three runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Ronny Cedeno and a two-run double by Rene Rivera.

In the fifth, San Diego scored four runs on six singles, including five in a row to open the inning. Six hits in one inning tied a season high.

Asche hit his fifth home run in the fifth inning for the Phillies' first run. The homer was his third in six games.

In his big league debut, catcher Cameron Rupp legged out an infield single and struck out twice for Philadelphia.

``The plate umpire (Mark Wegner) came over and said that's the best visibility he's seen all year and the best framing of pitches,' Sandberg said of Rupp. ``That's a big compliment and very unusual to hear.'

Rupp, whose father and siblings attended the game, joked about his dribbler down the third base line that resulted in his first career hit.

``That was exactly the way I drew it up,' Rupp said. ``I'm really happy. I couldn't be more excited. To play for a major league baseball team, I really enjoyed it.'

NOTES: Phillies RHP Roy Halladay, originally scheduled to pitch Tuesday, will instead start Thursday after experiencing flulike symptoms last weekend. ... MLB's 2014 schedule was released on Tuesday. The Phillies will open the season at Texas. ... Cliff Lee (12-6, 3.01 ERA) pitches Wednesday for the Phillies against Eric Stults (8-13, 4.07).
