ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jaime Garcia was at a loss for words.

The St. Louis left-hander sailed through the first four innings before a meltdown in the fifth and sixth proved to the difference in the Cardinals' 5-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

Garcia allowed just two hits on 66 pitches in the first four frames.

The Phillies then scored two runs in the fifth, and Marlon Byrd began the sixth with a home run. Domonic Brown followed with a double to end Garcia's once-promising night.

'I just wasn't able to execute my pitches,' he said. 'I don't know, I'm trying to figure it out.'

Garcia had retired 10 of 11 hitters to close out the fourth, and then he hit a wall.

'He started putting a lot of pitches in the middle of the plate,' St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina said. 'That's what happens when you leave pitches in the middle - they're going to hit it hard.'

Garcia (3-1) had allowed just one run in 15 innings in his previous two starts.

'I went out in the first inning and felt really good,' he said. 'I didn't get tired. Not sure what happened.'

Garcia gave up four runs and seven hits in five-plus innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

Philadelphia's A.J. Burnett scattered seven hits for his first complete game of the year, and the Phillies won their season-high fifth in a row.

'Complete games don't happen very often,' Burnett said. 'I got quick outs, groundball outs. I threw my changeup a lot. I bet I threw 20-plus. It was one of the days when the hook wasn't there. Normally, we keep pounding the hook trying to get it, but the changeup was effective. That pitch helped more than anything.'

The Phillies' winning streak has come on the road. They have won nine of 11 overall.

St. Louis has dropped three in a row after winning five straight.

Burnett (5-6) threw 111 pitches to earn his 24th complete game. He struck out three, walked one and hit two batters.

'He had command of three pitches and he seemed to really pound the zone,' Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. 'When we gave him the lead, he really held his stuff. He still had good stuff in the ninth inning. He did a lot of things to help himself win the game.'

Burnett, who came into the season as a career .110 hitter, also contributed an RBI double and scored.

John Mayberry Jr. added two hits and scored twice, and Jimmy Rollins drove in two runs and extended his hitting streak to 14 games with two hits for the Phillies.

The game began after a 50-minute rain delay.

St. Louis took a 1-0 lead in the third when Matt Carpenter was hit by a pitch with two outs and scored on a single by Matt Holliday.

Mayberry, Burnett and Rollins doubled in the fifth. Burnett drove in his first run of the season, and Rollins stretched his longest hitting streak since a 14-game run in 2007.

The Cardinals' Matt Adams had an up and down game at first base. He snagged a couple of hard hit balls and turned a nifty 3-6-3 double play. But he also failed to have his foot on base for a throw and was given an error.

In the ninth, he booted a grounder, but reliever Trevor Rostenthal grabbed the ball barehanded on his knees and pushed it back to Adams for an unusual 3-1-3 putout. Ryan Howard jumped over Rosenthal to try to reach first.

'You could see the ball finding me,' Adams said. 'I'm doing everything I can over there to help out our pitching staff.'

NOTES: The Cardinals didn't take batting practice before the game. ... The Phillies activated 3B Cody Asche (left hamstring) from the disabled list and put 3B Reid Brignac on the DL because of a sprained left ankle. Brignac hurt his ankle in a play at first base Thursday when he tried to beat pitcher Shelby Miller to the bag. Asche grew up in nearby St. Charles County and played at Busch Stadium for the first time. ... Cardinals P Kevin Siegrist (strained left forearm) played long toss from 120 feet. He hasn't pitched since May 23. He said he might throw a bullpen session on Sunday. ... Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said P Trevor Megill, the Cardinals' third-round pick in the amateur draft, has opted to return to Loyola Marymount for his senior season. Mozeliak said the team no longer will scout Megill, adding that Megill wanted more than the designated slot value of $504,400. ... Mozeliak said P Joe Kelly will have a 'rigorous bullpen' Sunday and then a 'baseball decision' will made about when Kelly might begin a rehab assignment. ... Rosemary Depler, of Peoria, Illinois, celebrated her 101st birthday by throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.
