PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Pat Burrell hit his first homer at Citizens Bank Park since he left the Philadelphia Phillies in the offseason and Carlos Pena also went deep to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to a 9-7 victory on Saturday.

Rays manager Joe Maddon put Burrell in the leadoff spot to get him an at-bat and took him out after his first-inning homer off Cole Hamels.

``I let him get away with that during the spring,' Hamels said with a laugh. ``I can't let that happen during the season. I kind of smiled at him when he hit it but he didn't see me. I think he was more concerned with how far the ball was going.'

Burrell signed with the Rays in the offseason after helping Philadelphia beat Tampa Bay in the World Series last year.

Pena also hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Willy Aybar finished with two hits and three RBIs for the Rays.

Hamels gave up six runs and six hits in five innings for Philadelphia. The World Series MVP was hampered by a sore left elbow last month and finished the spring with a 9.39 ERA.

``I definitely needed to go deeper in the game,' Hamels said. ``I think at the start I tried to be too perfect.'

Matt Garza allowed four runs and six hits in four innings for the Rays. He struck out four and walked three.

``I threw the changeup a lot, my body felt great, my arm felt great, it was a good day to rear back and let it go,' said Garza, who finished the spring with a 6.10 ERA. ``I could have went five if they wanted me too.'

Raul Ibanez, Greg Dobbs and Jason Donald homered for the Phillies.

Notes: The Phillies selected the contract of INF Miguel Cairo from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and put LHP J.C. Romero on the restricted list to finalize their roster ahead of Sunday night's opener against Atlanta. Romero will serve a 50-game suspension at the start of the season for testing positive for a banned substance after taking an over-the-counter supplement. ... Hamels' first start of the season is scheduled for Friday at Colorado. ... Maddon said he will alternate Akinori Iwamura and Jason Bartlett in the leadoff spot and nine-hole depending on matchups until B.J. Upton returns from left shoulder surgery.
