ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -The Los Angeles Angels didn't need a bench-clearing incident with their longtime playoff nemesis to unify the team - not after what they endured during the season's first week.

Manager Mike Scioscia, hitting coach Mickey Hatcher, center fielder Torii Hunter and reliever Justin Speier all were ejected from Sunday's 5-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox, the finale of a tragic and somber homestand for the two-time defending AL West champions.

One of the seven scheduled games was postponed because of the death of rookie Nick Adenhart, who pitched six scoreless innings against Oakland on Wednesday night and died hours later from injuries sustained in a car crash caused by a suspected drunken driver running a red light.

``I don't know if it's going to be any better,' catcher Mike Napoli said before the Angels embarked on a six-game road trip through Seattle and Minnesota. ``Nick's still not going to be there, and we're going to be reminded of it all the time. Maybe to just get away from our home field, be on the road and see different things might help, but I don't know.

``We're going to take his jersey on the road and keep him with us,' Napoli added. ``It doesn't seem real to me. It's hard to take it all in. It's been pretty rough on me. It's tough times right now, but we're all being strong around here and just trying to get through it.'

The Angels' emotionally charged week reached the breaking point in the first inning Sunday after a pitch by Boston ace Josh Beckett sailed over Bobby Abreu's head just as plate umpire Paul Schreiber jumped out of his crouch to call time.

``I've never hit anybody in the head, and it's not really on my list of stuff to accomplish. But people can think what they want to think,' Beckett said.

``I know Bobby Abreu. He knows I'm not trying to hit him in the head. Obviously, there's been a lot of emotion in this series with them - not only facing us, but obviously the tragedy that all of them went through.'

Dustin Moseley (1-0) was charged with three runs - two earned - and six hits in 5 2-3 innings with three strikeouts. The right-hander gave up back-to-back home runs by Kevin Youkilis and J.D. Drew in the second, right after Scioscia was ejected by third base ump Ed Rapuano because of something he said from the dugout.

Angels setup man Scot Shields escaped his own bases-loaded jam in the eighth after walking three. Brian Fuentes notched his second save, giving up an RBI single to David Ortiz before striking out Drew with runners at first and second.

Abreu hit a go-ahead two-run single in the third inning against Beckett (1-1), and Vladimir Guerrero hit his first home run of the season in the eighth off Hideki Okajima for a much-needed insurance run.

``It's been an emotional week for everybody,' Speier said. ``But the fact of the matter is this situation would have played out the way it played out without Nick's death. What (Beckett) did was totally uncalled for. It was total disrespect for us and for the game.'

Hunter added: ``I don't know if everybody had eyes on us because they think we're emotionally unstable right now or what. But what happened there was blatant.'

At Chicago, Jim Thome hit a two-run homer to break open a pitcher's duel and Mark Buehrle was dominant into the seventh inning to lead the White Sox.

Carlos Quentin singled off Nick Blackburn in the sixth before Thome hit his second homer of the season, snapping a 1-1 tie.

Jermaine Dye added a homer in the eighth for the White Sox, who scored in each of the last four innings to split a season-opening six-game homestand.

Buehrle (1-0) gave up Delmon Young's homer in the second and then retired 15 straight batters before being pulled with one out in the seventh.

Blackburn (0-1) allowed four runs - three earned - and six hits in six-plus innings.

At Cleveland, Anthony Reyes pitched six innings and the Indians earned their first victory after five straight losses.

Travis Hafner and Mark DeRosa each hit a two-run homer for the Indians, who avoided matching their worst start since 1914.

Blue Jays starter David Purcey (0-1) struck out 10 over 4 2-3 innings. The left-hander also walked six and allowed five runs and four hits.

Vernon Wells hit a two-run homer for Toronto.

Reyes (1-0) gave up four runs and three hits.

At Baltimore, James Shields pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, Evan Longoria hit his major league-leading fifth home run and Tampa Bay averted a three-game sweep.

Longoria went 3-for-5 to up his batting average to .481. Ben Zobrist, Jason Bartlett and Carlos Pena also homered for the Rays, who got 17 hits.

Shields (1-1) struck out three and walked one. Dan Wheeler allowed one hit in the eighth before Grant Balfour was tagged for three runs in the ninth.

Adam Eaton (0-1) allowed four runs and eight hits over four innings in his debut with Baltimore.

At Oakland, Calif., Erik Bedard allowed three hits pitching into the ninth inning and Mike Sweeney doubled in a run in the seventh for Seattle.

Bedard (1-0) was within two outs of his second career shutout when he was lifted for David Aardsma, who struck out Jason Giambi and got Jack Cust to line out with a pair of runners aboard for his second save.

Trevor Cahill (0-1) retired 11 consecutive batters before Adrian Beltre singled up the middle with one out in the seventh. After Russell Branyan flew out, Sweeney drove in the game's only run with a double to center.

At Kansas City, Mo., John Buck homered and drove in three runs, helping the Royals avoid a three-game sweep.

Kansas City scored three runs with two outs in the eighth off Jose Veras and Phil Coke (0-1), spoiling a solid start by Joba Chamberlain in his season debut.

Joakim Soria earned his third save by striking out the side in the ninth. Juan Cruz (1-0) worked a perfect eighth for the win.

Chamberlain held the Royals to three runs - one earned - and four hits in six innings.

Gil Meche went seven innings for Kansas City, allowing four runs and six hits.

At Detroit, Brandon Inge homered and hit a two-run single in a six-run eighth inning as the Tigers rallied to complete a three-game sweep.

Carlos Guillen also had a two-run double for Detroit, which trailed 4-0 after seven innings.

Brandon Lyon (1-1) threw two perfect innings and Fernando Rodney got three outs for his second save in as many days.

Josh Hamilton and Ian Kinsler hit two-run homers for Texas, which wasted a terrific start by Kevin Millwood. The right-hander threw seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out six. C.J. Wilson (0-1) got the loss.
