Recap: Rockies , Indians

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) -Jeremy Sowers and Zach Jackson stayed about even in the race to be Cleveland's No. 5 starter. They both had mediocre outings.

The left-handers each allowed a run and four hits in two innings of the Indians' 6-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday.

``Opening day is five weeks away,' Indians manager Eric Wedge said. ``It's way too early to tell.'

Jackson, who started the game, gave up a run in the second. Sowers followed by allowing a run in the third. He was helped out when right fielder Stephen Head threw out a runner at the plate after catching a fly ball to end the inning.

Neither pitcher was that impressed with his performance.

``I don't want to say I took a step back, but I didn't keep the ball down,' Sowers said.

Said Jackson: ``I'm disappointed partly because I didn't get a chance to show the lefties my breaking ball. A couple of times they jumped on the first pitch and I didn't get the opportunity to use it.'

Aaron Laffey, another lefty, is also competing for the fifth spot. He will start Monday against Texas.

Aaron Cook, who started for the Rockies, has no such worries. Colorado's ace was 16-9 and made the All-Star team last season so giving up five runs and seven hits in three innings isn't going to spoil his spring.

``I got hit around,' he said. ``It's only my second game. There's nothing to panic about yet.'

Third baseman Omar Quintanilla's error in the first inning made three of the runs off Cook unearned. Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer in the second.

Cook was grazed by Trevor Crowe's line drive that ended up in center field to start the game.

``It skidded across my back,' he said. ``It didn't hit me flush.'

Ubaldo Jimenez, making his last appearance before leaving camp to join the Dominican Republic team in the World Baseball Classic, struck out three in three scoreless innings.

Colorado is playing without outfielder Brad Hawpe, who cut a finger on his left hand diving into a base Friday. He's expected to resume baseball activities in five to seven days.

Notes: RHP Kerry Wood threw 40 pitches in a bullpen session Saturday and is slated to throw batting practice Wednesday. ... Wedge hopes RHP Adam Miller's sore middle finger won't keep him out of action very long. ``Adam said it felt better,' Wedge said. ``Hopefully, we nipped it in the bud a little.' Miller, the leading candidate to win the last bullpen spot, had surgery on the finger last season and was scratched from pitching Friday. ... Colorado has been outscored 33-16 in its five games. ... The Rockies host the Dodgers in Tucson on Monday. LHP Franklin Morales starts for Colorado.
