LAS VEGAS (AP) -With Ichiro Suzuki sidelined to start the season, Endy Chavez and Franklin Gutierrez are competing for his leadoff spot.

Both had two hits in the Seattle Mariners' 6-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Friday night as the teams played in a chilly 25-35 mph wind.

``Those are the only two guys I would consider,' Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu said. ``Probably Endy, more so (leadoff). Gutierrez gives us some opportunities as well. Endy has done a good job all spring. Endy is the guy we're looking at.'

In the bottom of the third inning with one out and none on, Chavez, who batted leadoff, manufactured a leadoff hitter-type of run. He singled, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on Gutierrez's single against Franklin Morales.

Gutierrez, who batted second, also walked and scored in the fifth.

Coming into Friday, Chavez was batting .500, while Gutierrez was at .309. Suzuki will be out due to a bleeding ulcer, but is scheduled to return from the DL on April 15.

Rockies first baseman Todd Helton continued his strong spring, going 3-for-3 with an RBI double. He is now 21-of-40 this spring.

``He's going to hit,' Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. ``He's healthy and he's going to get healthier.'

Two of his hits, including that fourth-inning RBI double to left field, were aided by the wind. He's coming off back lower back surgery in Oct. 2008.

``(The back) is good. I'm ready to go and play,' Helton said before the game. ``It will be interesting to see how loose it is this weather. I'm excited about the season.'

Helton also made a great defensive scoop on a throw from shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on a putout of Gutierrez in the first inning.

Helton's hits all came off losing pitcher Jared Washburn, who went five innings and allowed five runs and 10 hits.

``I thought (Washburn) was great. It's tough with those conditions,' Wakamatsu said of his left-hander, who's scheduled to start at Minnesota on Thursday. ``A couple of those balls were wind-blown. I was happy. He threw 93 pitches and we were 100 set. Main thing is he came out healthy.'

Rockies left fielder Ryan Spilborghs, selected as the team's spring MVP, had a wind-aided homer to right in the first inning against Washburn.

Morales went five innings, allowing three runs and seven hits. Hurdle was happy with Morales, who's scheduled to start at Arizona on Wednesday.

``I thought he had a blue-collar effort,' Hurdle said. ``He had some good, quiet outs - good curve ball - and his fastball was working on both sides of the plate. He stayed in line with his mechanics.'

Notes: The Mariners returned Rule 5 selection infielder Reegie Corona to the New York Yankees. Seattle has 36 players on the 40-man roster and 34 on the spring roster. Wakamatsu said the final 25 players would be announced after Saturday's game against Colorado. ... This is the fifth consecutive spring the Mariners have wrapped up their exhibition season in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, this is Colorado's first trip to Las Vegas since 2004, when its two games against Texas were rained out.
