SAN DIEGO (AP) - Tim Stauffer said he flinched a little. It was one costly mistake.

Stauffer committed his first career balk Friday night, and it forced in a run in the San Diego Padres' 3-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies.

Jason Hammel pitched into the seventh inning and Troy Tulowitzki had two hits for Colorado, which scored three times in the second inning and earned its 10th win in its last 13 games at Petco Park.

Ian Stewart and Chris Iannetta each had an RBI single, and Stewart eventually came around when Stauffer balked in his 86th appearance in the majors.

``I was trying to come set a little bit and then I stepped off,' he said. ``I guess (home plate umpire Mike Winters) thought I flinched again. It looked different than it felt.'

Stauffer (6-8) gave up eight hits, struck out three and walked one in seven innings, dropping to 3-4 with a 2.88 ERA in 11 home starts this season.

Tulowitzki and Seth Smith began the second with consecutive singles and each runner moved up on a groundout. Stewart and Iannetta then had run-scoring singles to make it 2-0.

Stewart and Iannetta pulled off a double steal without a throw with Hammel at the plate, setting up the run-scoring balk.

The Padres thwarted another Colorado run by pitching out when Hammel attempted a suicide squeeze. Catcher Luis Martinez took the pitch and fired to Chase Headley at third base, who tagged out Iannetta.

``It was well pitched on both sides,' San Diego manager Bud Black said. ``But they got some outs when they needed to in the middle of the game.'

Hammel (6-10) was charged with two runs and five hits in 6 1-3 innings. The 6-foot-6 right-hander snapped a personal two-game slide and earned just his second victory in his last seven starts.

San Diego's Cameron Maybin finished with three hits and is batting .387 since the All-Star break. Maybin has hit safely in 13 of 14 games.

Hammel left after losing pinch-hitter Kyle Blanks to a walk, and the Rockies used three relievers to finish the inning.

Matt Lindstrom came in and struck out Maybin before allowing a single to Orlando Hudson that moved Blanks to third. Matt Reynolds then walked Headley to load the bases before Matt Belisle retired Ryan Ludwick on a popup.

Rafael Betancourt worked the eighth and Huston Street finished for his 28th save in 30 chances. Maybin doubled with two out in the ninth, but Street got Hudson to ground out to end the game.

San Diego cut the lead to 3-2 in the third. Maybin doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Hudson's infield hit that bounced off the glove of a diving Tulowitzki at shortstop. Hudson then stole second and scored on Headley's single.

NOTES: Padres LHP Clayton Richard underwent season-ending arthroscopic shoulder surgery. ... The Rockies are without a homer in five straight games, their longest streak in nearly a year. ... San Diego scratched RF Will Venable (back spasms) and SS Jason Bartlett (tight right hamstring) from the starting lineup.
