Game: 3
Venue: Great American Ball Park
Date: May 27, 2012 1:10 PM EDT

CINCINNATI (AP) - Carlos Gonzalez and the Colorado Rockies came up just a few solo home runs short against the Cincinnati Reds.

All told, the Rockies hit five homers - Gonzalez had two - and it wasn't enough.

Brandon Phillips hit a three-run homer to help the Cincinnati Reds bash their way past the Colorado Rockies 7-5 Sunday in a game that set a record for Great American Ball Park with nine home runs.

``I don't think I've ever managed a game in which there were nine home runs,' Colorado manager Jim Tracy said.

``In defeat, I can't tell you how proud I am of this ballclub the way they stayed after it today,' Tracy said.

Mat Latos allowed five hits - and all of them were solo home runs. Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez hit two of them, and Troy Tulowitzki, Michael Cuddyer and Dexter Fowler also took the Cincinnati starter deep.

Latos became the first Reds pitcher to win a game in which he allowed five home runs.

Joey Votto, Jay Bruce and Todd Frazier homered for Cincinnati, which finished 6-1 on a seven-game homestand during which 29 home runs were hit - also a ballpark best.

Latos (4-2) didn't walk anybody and had three strikeouts in a season-high 7 1-3 innings to improve to 4-0 over his last seven starts.

``We did a good job against a pitcher like Mat Latos. We were familiar with him from his days in our division at San Diego. To fall behind like we did and have the go ahead run at the plate twice in the eighth inning and the tying run at the plate in the ninth and running down the first base line like we did, there is absolutely nothing more you can ask of your ballclub. It was an A-plus effort the entire game.'

Aroldis Chapman pitched 1 2-3 innings for his third save to help the Reds go 6-1 on the home stand.

Jamie Moyer (2-5) gave up seven hits and a season-high seven runs with one walk and two strikeouts in five innings. He also hit a batter with a pitch.

He is trying to set an example for a young Colorado rotation that has pitched into the sixth inning just once in the last six games.

``It's not really putting our bullpen into an ideal situation,' Moyer said. ``Whether it is hard or not doesn't make any difference. It really doesn't matter. It is a matter of figuring it out and being more consistent. We have to pitch better. You look at any team that wins, they are consistent and give their bullpen better innings to pitch.'

Phillips put Cincinnati ahead 5-1 with his fifth homer of the season, a shot to the left-field seats with two outs in the third inning.

Gonzalez cut into the in the fourth, but Todd Frazier restored the four-run lead in the bottom half and the Reds actually scored a run without a homer on Ryan Hanigan's single and Zack Cozart's double that made it 7-2.

``There is nothing we could do about the first four innings of the game,' Tracy said. ``Six of their seven runs cross the plate via the home run. You can't catch those. Cozart has the double and there you go.'

Michael Cuddyer made it 7-3 with the longest drive of the game, a 448-foot blast off the center field batter's eye.

Gonzalez added his second homer with two outs in the sixth for his third two-homer game of the season and the seventh of his career.

Fowler set the record as a pinch-hitter in the eighth.

In the second inning, Tulowitzki tied the game after Votto went deep in the first inning, but Bruce put the Reds back on top with his first home run since May 8 at Milwaukee. Before that, he had been 2 for 34.

NOTES: Colorado's Jordan Pacheco grounded into a game-ending double and his hitting streak ended at 11 games. ... Former Reds OF Ken Griffey Jr. visited the Cincinnati clubhouse with sons Trey and Tevin before the game. Griffey, who grew up in the area, played for the Reds from 2000 into the 2008 season before being traded to the White Sox. ... The Rockies and Astros both will be allowed to add a player to their rosters for Monday's doubleheader in Colorado. Rules allow teams to add one player each for scheduled doubleheaders, but they must indicate only 25 active players for each game and the new players must be returned to the minors after the games. ... Reds RHP Bronson Arroyo faces the team with which he broke into the majors when Cincinnati open a seven-day, six-game road trip Monday in Pittsburgh against James McDonald.
