Rick Ankiel set to come off DL, rejoin Nationals
April 13, 2012
WASHINGTON (AP) - Center fielder Rick Ankiel is set to come off the disabled list and join the Washington Nationals for Saturday's game against the Cincinnati Reds.
Manager Davey Johnson said the Nationals would open up a roster spot by designating outfielder Brett Carroll for assignment.
``I hope we can keep him,'' Johnson said about Carroll after Washington beat Cincinnati 2-1 in 13 innings Friday night.
Ankiel has been on a minor league rehabilitation assignment after being slowed by a left quadriceps injury in spring training that limited him to 15 at_bats in exhibition games. He arrived in Washington on Friday and worked out with teammates in the afternoon.
Johnson indicated he plans to use Ankiel as his everyday starting center fielder.
``I like him out there. He's an outstanding defender,'' Johnson said. ``I liked what I saw in the spring, the limited time I got to see him. ... I was real impressed with his set-up and his approach. So I'm expecting an improved Rick Ankiel this year.''
