DENVER (AP) - Hit hard early, fill-in starter Collin McHugh managed to put together a couple of solid innings near the end of his outing, a hopeful sign should he make another start.

Called up by Colorado before the game to replace lefty Drew Pomeranz, who went on the 15-day disabled list the day before with biceps tendinitis, McHugh gave up six runs and nine hits in five innings in the Rockies' 7-5 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday night.

``Tough start for him,'' Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. ``It looked like he got some sliders up that they hit pretty good. The thing I liked is he put the zeroes up in the fourth and fifth. It was big for our bullpen, and it kept us within striking distance and not having to blow up our bullpen.''

The Brewers did most of their damage in the first three innings, when they jumped on McHugh to take a 6-0 lead.

``I was just not executing pitches,'' McHugh said. ``We got guys in some pretty good counts and just couldn't execute the pitch I needed to. They swung the bat well, they were pretty aggressive. You just hate to put your team in a hole like that early on.''

The Rockies fought back to make it close and McHugh (0-2) kept the Brewers in check in the fourth and fifth innings.

``It was definitely good to have a couple of clean innings to finish your outing,'' McHugh said. ``You feel like you got a good battle in, even though you came out on the wrong side of it. That's what we're looking for. Hopefully we can build on that and whenever they throw me in there next just be able to go out and compete really well.''

Carlos Gomez had two hits and three of Milwaukee's five stolen bases, Juan Francisco and Jonathan Lucroy homered, helping the Brewers hang on.

Milwaukee's Jean Segura had two hits and two RBIs before leaving with tightness in his right forearm.

Troy Tulowitzki homered among his three hits and Wilin Rosario also went deep for the Rockies.

The Brewers were three outs from winning when the rain picked up and caused a 1-hour, 45-minute delay in the middle of the ninth inning. Jim Henderson then retired the Rockies in order for his 12th save.

It made a winner out of Tom Gorzelanny (2-4), who allowed four runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings. He was sharp early, giving up just three hits and not allowing a runner to second through the first five innings as the Brewers built a six-run lead.

Gorzelanny then ran into trouble in the sixth when the rain started falling. DJ LeMahieu doubled with one out and scored on Tulowitzki's single to center. Michael Cuddyer walked and Rosario followed with his 14th homer to make it 6-4 and chase Gorzelanny.

NOTES: The Brewers will send RHP Donovan Hand (0-2) against Colorado's Jhoulys Chacin (9-5) in the final of the three-game series. ... Lucroy had gone 0-10 against the Rockies this season before going 2 for 4 with a double, home run and two runs Saturday night.
