Astros nip White Sox, 'over' easily cashes

CHICAGO (AP) - Andre Rienzo had a shaky start and Addison Reed struggled in the ninth.

It was that kind of game for the Chicago White Sox.

Reed yielded consecutive homers with two out in the ninth inning, sending the White Sox to a 10-8 loss to the Houston Astros on Monday night.

``That's kind of the story of our year. We look good one series and then do something like this,'' Reed said. ``They did everything they could to get me in the game and like I said before, it was on me. I could have avoided it but I made a couple bad pitches.''

Reed (5-2) struck out Jose Altuve and Jason Castro before Matt Dominguez hit a drive to left for his 19th homer. Chris Carter then went deep for his second homer of the game and No. 25 on the year.

The White Sox loaded the bases in the bottom half but Jordan Lyles struck out Avisail Garcia looking to end the game.

Lyles, who's made 20 starts, was scheduled to throw a bullpen session Monday or pitch in the game. And because of Houston's six-man rotation, he was needed to finish the victory.

``It's just one of those last-minute things,'' Lyles said.

David Martinez (1-0) allowed three runs and five hits in 2 2-3 innings but managed to get his first major league win.

Alejandro De Aza tied a career high with four hits for the White Sox, who had won eight of 10. Adam Dunn hit a two-run shot in the sixth to become second lefty hitter in White Sox history with consecutive 30-homer seasons, joining Jim Thome from 2006-08.

``You know, it's just one of those where guys were swinging the bats, guys weren't pitching very well and a lot of runs were scored,'' Chicago manager Robin Ventura said.

The White Sox hurt themselves with three wild pitches, and one Houston batter reached on a dropped third strike. Garcia made an error in right in the second that allowed two runs to score, and De Aza was tagged out at third after hesitating on a grounder between home and the pitcher's mound.

The Astros squandered a five-run lead and trailed 8-7 before Carter hit a tying RBI single in the seventh inning.

Rienzo allowed seven runs, five earned, and nine hits in six innings. He also yielded three home runs.

``Tough night for me,'' Rienzo said. ``I missed a couple spots.''

NOTES: Garcia returned to the lineup after leaving Sunday's game against Texas in the fourth inning. Garcia collided with the right-field fence on Jeff Baker's two-run homer and was removed after getting checked out by a trainer and Ventura. Garcia said he felt better Monday. Ventura explained that Garcia came out of Sunday's game because of a dehydration issue and it was not concussion related. ... One day after getting ejected by crew chief Jerry Layne while exchanging the pregame lineup card, White Sox bench coach Mark Parent admitted he ``pretty much knew'' he would be ejected for his comments. Parent, whose ejection was his second of the season and third of his career, did not reveal what he said to Lane but acknowledged it stemmed from Saturday's game against the Rangers. ... Houston RHP Paul Clemens will be recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to start Tuesday's game. The Astros will announce a corresponding move. . Astros OF Robbie Grossman's two-out double in the fourth inning extended his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games.
