ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Tim Bogar was hired Monday as bench coach for the Texas Rangers.

Bogar replaces Jackie Moore, who was let go by Texas along with first base coach Dave Anderson after the Rangers missed the playoffs for the first time in four seasons.

Bogar spent this season as manager at Double-A Arkansas in the Los Angeles Angels' organization. He was previously on Boston's coaching staff for four years, including 2012 as bench coach, and was a quality assurance coach for Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon in 2008. Bogar worked in Boston with Rangers hitting coach Dave Magadan.

A former major league infielder, Bogar will also be the Rangers' infield instructor and organize spring training. Those were among Anderson's responsibilities for Texas.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Bogar was among four candidates he interviewed in person last week for the bench coach job.

The Rangers still have to hire a new first-base coach.

Bogar spent part of 1991 and then 1992 with Triple-A Tidewater in the New York Mets organization when current Rangers manager Ron Washington was a coach there.

During his nine major league seasons with the Mets, Houston and Los Angeles Dodgers, Bogar played on the same teams with Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux in New York (1993-94) and Houston (2000).

The Rangers also said Monday that utility player Jeff Baker has been granted free agency after refusing an outright assignment. He was designated for assignment Oct. 9.

Baker his .279 with 11 home runs and 21 RBIs in 74 games for the Rangers. He got off to a strong start, but struggled after returning from a month on the disabled list for a sprained right thumb sustained after an over-exuberant high-five with a teammate.
