MLB Betting Preview – Reds at Dodgers

Clayton Kershaw will make his first start of the season on Monday night, as the Los Angeles Dodgers host the Cincinnati Reds on ESPN. The Dodgers ace returns from the injured list after having left shoulder inflammation. Cincinnati is scheduled to throw Luis Castillo on Monday and he has been excellent this season for the Reds. Cincinnati started the season poorly, but they have played much better of late, while the Dodgers started the season well, but have hit the skids recently. Let’s look at the contest and MLB picks.

Cincinnati Reds at Los Angeles Dodgers
Date and Time: Monday, April 15, 2019, 10:10 p.m. Eastern
Location: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA
MLB Odds per BetDSI: Dodgers -154, O/U 7.5
Probable Pitchers: Castillo vs. Kershaw
Reds vs. Dodgers TV Coverage: ESPN

The Reds started the season terribly, losing eight of their first nine, but they got well against the Marlins and then did well against the Cardinals. They will try and keep their momentum going against the Dodgers. The Reds have played four road games this season and they were swept by the Pirates. Cincinnati is averaging 3.6 runs per game and giving up about 2.7 per contest.

The Dodgers were rolling along until facing the Cardinals and they were swept in St. Louis, losing all four games. It didn’t get any better coming home as they were dominated by Milwaukee. They head into this series looking for a big effort from Kershaw. The Dodgers are averaging over 6 runs per game but they are giving up about 5 per contest.

Starting Pitchers

The Reds have been thrilled with Luis Castillo so far this season. He is 1-1 with a 0.92 ERA. He has 25 strikeouts in 19.2 innings. He has only given up five hits this season. He has walked eight, but that is the only concern.

Kershaw will be making his season debut. He allowed two runs in six innings in his rehab start at Double-A Tulsa on Tuesday. He went five scoreless innings and then gave up two solo home runs in the sixth inning.

Key Stats

The Reds are 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in Los Angeles. The Reds are 10-4 in their last 14 vs. the National League West. The Reds are 16-35 in their last 51 road games. The Reds are 20-46 in their last 66 road games vs. a left-handed starter. The Reds are 7-1 in Castillo’s last 8 series openers.

The Dodgers are 9-3 in their last 12 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Dodgers are 30-14 in their last 44 series openers. The Dodgers are 23-11 in their last 34 home games. The Dodgers are 0-6 in their last 6 vs. the National League Central. The Dodgers are 42-12 in Kershaw’s last 54 home starts. The Dodgers are 9-3 in Kershaw’s last 12 starts vs. the National League Central.

Looking at the total, the Under is 8-0 in the Reds last 8 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Under is 37-17-1 in the Reds last 55 overall. The Under is 7-1 in Castillo’s last 8 starts overall. The Under is 4-1 in Castillo’s last 5 road starts. The Over is 7-2 in the Dodgers last 9 home games. The Under is 4-0-1 in Kershaw’s last 5 home starts.

Reds vs. Dodgers Picks

It is definitely tempting to take the plus price and go with the Reds, especially since they have done really well in Los Angeles lately. The problem with backing Cincinnati is that Kershaw is capable of going out there and completely shutting the Reds down. It is tough to back that 42-12 stat of the Dodgers at home with Kershaw on the mound.

The better choice could be the total in this game. Castillo has been outstanding so far this season for the Reds and Kershaw is normally very tough at home. Both the Reds and Dodgers have been struggling with their bullpens, so that is a bit of a concern, but we’ll count on Castillo and Kershaw to shut things down. We’ll go 'under' the total at BetDSI for this Monday night matchup.
