ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -Matt Garza and two relievers combined on a six-hitter and Carlos Pena homered to lead AL East-leading Tampa Bay past Toronto 1-0 on Wednesday night.
Garza (11-7) allowed six hits and three walks with five strikeouts over 7 2-3 innings. Dan Wheeler pitched the ninth for his ninth save.
Pena homered in the fourth, his 27th of the season and sixth over his past 13 games.
Blue Jays rookie David Purcey gave up five hits and struck out a career-high 11 in eight innings for his first career complete game. He struck out 10 and allowed three hits - two by Pena, including the homer - in the first five innings.
The announced attendance was 12,678, the fifth straight Rays' home game with a crowd under 20,000.
NEW YORK (AP) - Jason Bay drove in four runs and Dustin Pedroia hit a grand slam for Boston.
Pedroia's first career slam capped a seven-run eighth inning and New York dropped seven games behind Boston, which leads the AL wild-card race by 2 1/2 games over Minnesota.
The Red Sox remained 3 1/2 games behind first-place Tampa Bay in the AL East.
Sidney Ponson (7-5) lasted 4 2-3 innings and dropped to 3-13 with a 6.95 ERA in 22 starts against the Red Sox.
Paul Byrd (9-11) allowed two runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out five and improved to 2-1 in three starts since Boston acquired him from the Indians this month. Byrd has won six of his last seven starts following a five-game losing streak.
Bay hit a two-run double in the first and an RBI triple in the eighth when Boston battered relievers Jose Veras and David Robertson.
BALTIMORE (AP) - Brian Roberts had three RBIs as Baltimore ended a five-game losing streak.
Roberts gave the Orioles the lead for good with a two-run single in the second, then drove in a run with his AL-leading 46th double in the fourth.
Aubrey Huff hit his 29th homer and drove in three runs, and Melvin Mora and Kevin Millar also homered for the Orioles.
Paul Konerko and Jermaine Dye homered for the White Sox, whose lead over Minnesota in the AL Central was sliced to one game.

The Twins scored three runs in the eighth to take a 6-4 lead. Consecutive doubles by Kenji Johjima and Jeff Clement in the bottom of the inning made it 6-5.
Miguel Cairo grounded a single to right which Span fielded cleanly and threw a perfect strike to catcher Mike Redmond, getting pinch-runner Tug Hulett by a few feet.

The Twins took the lead in the eighth against Sean Green (3-4) on a run-scoring double by Jason Kubel and a two-run single by pinch-hitter Brian Buscher.
