LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (AP) - Croatia eliminated Greece from the European basketball championship Monday with a 92-88 victory in double overtime, while Italy also needed OT to beat two-time defending champion Spain 86-81.
The loss meant little for Spain, which had qualified for the quarterfinals thanks to Croatia's victory.
Spain dropped to fourth place in Group F and will play Serbia in the first quarterfinal Wednesday. Also Wednesday, host Slovenia faces France, while on Thursday, Croatia plays Ukraine and Lithuania takes on Italy.
Italy overcame a 15-point deficit and 32 points and 10 rebounds from Marc Gasol to win, with Luigi Datome making a layup at the buzzer to force overtime. Alessandro Gentile scored 25 points.
Bojan Bogdanovic made two free throws with 18 seconds left to clinch Croatia's victory. Bogdanovic led all scorers with 22 points.
Greece needed to beat Croatia and hope for wins by Italy against Spain and Slovenia over Finland to have any chance of advancing to the quarterfinals. Instead, Croatia, which had already advanced, clinched Group F.
Croatia is trying to make the podium at a major tournament for the first time in 18 years.
