PLAYER UPDATES Provided By SportsBuff.com
Player: Calvin Johnson WR, Detroit Lions 11/20/08, Time: 5:51 pm
News: Johnson practiced on Thursday after missing Wednesday's practice due to a quad injury.
 Analysis:

Johnson is expected to start against Tampa Bay on Sunday. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Jason Hanson K, Detroit Lions 11/20/08, Time: 12:51 pm
News: Hanson is a solid kicker but plays on a team that spends little time in the red-zone. He still has managed 106 fantasy points so far this season.
 Analysis:

Hanson is a decent No. 1 option at kicker for Week 12 against Tampa Bay. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Calvin Johnson WR, Detroit Lions 11/20/08, Time: 12:50 pm
News: Johnson had six catches for 65 yards and a touchdown last week and has registered a touchdown reception in five of his last six games.
 Analysis:

Johnson is the lone bright spot for the woeful Lions and is a must-start in all formats. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Daunte Culpepper QB, Detroit Lions 11/20/08, Time: 12:47 pm
News: Culpepper threw for 207 yards in Week 11 with one touchdown, two interceptions and one lost fumble. He also scored a rushing touchdown and was stopped on a two-point conversion attempt.
 Analysis:

Culpepper is one a horrible team and he is new to the system, so search for any other QB. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Dwight Freeney DE, Indianapolis Colts 11/20/08, Time: 6:38 am
News: Freeney did not practice on Wednesday as the Colts' decided to rest him.
 Analysis:

Freeney has battled injuries all year but has played well with seven sacks and three forced fumbles. Freeney will play in Week 12 against the Chargers. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Calvin Johnson WR, Detroit Lions 11/16/08, Time: 4:43 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Johnson scored for the fifth time in six weeks and had 64 yards against Carolina.
 Analysis:

Here's one thing you can say about Matt Millen - he kept trying until he got it right. Johnson was the fourth wide receiver he selected in the first round and he is a stud. Now, if the Lions could field a competent team around him. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Kevin Smith RB, Detroit Lions 11/16/08, Time: 4:41 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Smith had another effective running day for the Lions. He ran for 112 yards on 24 carries against the Panthers.
 Analysis:

With the Lions brass finally coming to their senses and giving the young fella the ball, Smith is producing. He has 208 yards over the last two weeks and has scored five times this season. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Daunte Culpepper QB, Detroit Lions 11/16/08, Time: 4:39 pm
 Status:
Cold
News: Culpepper was once again not great for the Lions. He did throw for a TD and run another in, but he was intercepted twice and threw for 207 yards.
 Analysis:

It's hard to believe that it was just five years ago that Culpepper threw for 39 TD's with the Vikings. He's been with four teams since then and is simply not a very effective QB. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Anthony Gonzalez WR, Indianapolis Colts 11/16/08, Time: 10:44 am
News: Anthony Gonzalez and Reggie Wayne are both active and available for the Colts today. (SportsBuff.com)
Player: Bob Sanders DB, Indianapolis Colts 11/16/08, Time: 10:42 am
News: Bob Sanders in inactive for today's game. IDP owners need to look for a replacement. His fill-in Melvin Bullitt should be a solid option. (SportsBuff.com)
Player: Dewayne White DE, Detroit Lions 11/16/08, Time: 8:25 am
News: The Lions will be without both starting defensive ends today. IDP owners who regularly use Dewayne White will have to seek out a replacement, and the young guys charged with replacing him won't offer that help. The further weakening of an already weak pass rush will only help Jake Delhomme and the Panthers pass offense. (SportsBuff.com)
Player: Anthony Gonzalez WR, Indianapolis Colts 11/15/08, Time: 12:26 pm
 Status:
Questionable
News: Gonzalez is listed as questionable for Sunday with a touchy hamstring. He practice fully on Friday, though, and is expected to play.
 Analysis:

Gonzalez is a decent option. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Robert Mathis DE, Indianapolis Colts 11/15/08, Time: 12:24 pm
 Status:
Questionable
News: Mathis is listed as questionable with a foot injury. He was a full practice participant on Friday, though, and doctors said Thursday that he should be able to play.
 Analysis:

Mathis is a solid IDP line starter against the Texans. Go ahead and use him. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Bob Sanders DB, Indianapolis Colts 11/15/08, Time: 12:22 pm
 Status:
Questionable
News: Sanders missed practice Friday because of the knee he recently had surgery on. He's listed as questionable for Sunday's meeting with Houston.
 Analysis:

There hasn't been any particular reported setback, so it seems like Sanders will probably play. We'll keep an eye out on Sunday morning. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Reggie Wayne WR, Indianapolis Colts 11/15/08, Time: 12:17 pm
News: Wayne, who has been suffering from a knee injury, is expected to play in Week 11 against the Texans.
 Analysis:

Wayne is a must-start fantasy option when healthy and should definitely be in your starting lineup. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Daunte Culpepper QB, Detroit Lions 11/13/08, Time: 7:35 am
News: Culpepper will remain the starting quarterback for the Lions in their Week 11 game against Carolina.
 Analysis:

Culpepper completed only five out of ten passes for 104 yards and one interception against Jacksonville last Sunday. Culpepper does not have a good matchup and should not be started against the Panthers. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Kevin Smith RB, Detroit Lions 11/11/08, Time: 2:01 pm
News: Smith had a nice statistical day in Week 10 with 96 yards rushing and 27 yards receiving and scored a touchdown.
 Analysis:

Look for Smith to get the bulk of the carries for the rest of the season as the Lions try to build towards next season. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Calvin Johnson WR, Detroit Lions 11/11/08, Time: 1:59 pm
News: Johnson caught two balls for 92 yards in Week 10. He is one of the lone bright spots for the Lions offense.
 Analysis:

Look for Johnson to continue to rack up points but do not be surprised if opposing teams start triple-teaming him. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Daunte Culpepper QB, Detroit Lions 11/11/08, Time: 1:57 pm
News: Culpepper had only 104 yards passing in Week 10 and most of those yards came off one bomb to Calvin Johnson. He was also picked off once.
 Analysis:

Culpepper is likely to find himself back in the unemployment line sooner than later. The only thing that could make Culpepper a decent play is if he is a quick study with the playbook in Detroit. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Calvin Johnson WR, Detroit Lions 11/09/08, Time: 7:09 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Although Johnson did not get into the endzone for the first time in five weeks, he did haul in two passes for 92 yards.
 Analysis:

Johnson is proof that you can have a terrible QB and still be a productive receiver. He is a clear building block for the Lions and after drafting four receivers in the first round in the last decade, it looks like they finally got it right. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Kevin Smith RB, Detroit Lions 11/09/08, Time: 7:07 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Smith had a nice day against the Jaguars. He ran for 96 yards and a TD.
 Analysis:

It's about time that the Lions gave Smith the rock consistently. He has five TD's on the season and seeing as the Lions have already been mathematically eliminated from the Playoffs (OK, well, maybe not mathematically), they should see what their young players can do. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Drew Stanton QB, Detroit Lions 11/09/08, Time: 7:06 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Stanton looked decent in mop up duty of a fourth quarter blowout. He went 6-for-8 with 94 yards and a TD.
 Analysis:

At this point, the Lions should be encouraged by any player - other than Calvin Johnson - putting up numbers. Stanton, a rookie from Michigan State, may get an opportunity to play more in the near future. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Daunte Culpepper QB, Detroit Lions 11/09/08, Time: 7:04 pm
 Status:
Cold
News: Culpepper looked old and rusty in his first start as a Lion. He went 5-for-10 for 104 yards and an interception.
 Analysis:

Culpepper was benched in the fourth quarter when the game was out of hand. Because Drew Stanton showed something (anything!) in the fourth quarter, he may get the start next week against the Panthers. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Kevin Smith RB, Detroit Lions 11/09/08, Time: 11:43 am
News: The unexpected deactivation of MLB Mike Peterson by the Jaguars only strengthens the case for Kevin Smith as a fantasy starter this week. The Jaguars will also be without starting tackle John Henderson on defense, and Cincy's Cedric Benson surpassed 100 yards against them last week anyway. Plus, the Lions might actually stick with the run for once to help out new starting quarterback Daunte Culpepper. Then again, they are the Lions. (SportsBuff.com)
Player: Daunte Culpepper QB, Detroit Lions 11/09/08, Time: 8:14 am
News: We'll see Daunte Culpepper under center today for the first time since Week 12 of last season. His big arm could be a nice fit with Calvin Johnson, one of the league's biggest and most physically gifted receivers. Starting Culpepper right away in fantasy, though, would be risky at best. He has had less than a week to get to know his new offense, plays behind a less-than-stellar line and has played just 18 games over the past three seasons. Johnson remains a solid starter, though. (SportsBuff.com)
Player: Kevin Smith RB, Detroit Lions 11/08/08, Time: 11:53 am
News: The team has yet to name its starting quarterback for Week 10 officially, but it will be without Dan Orlovsky. The choice apparently comes down to a first-time starter (Drew Stanton) and a veteran who spent all off-season after the first half of this year at home (Daunte Culpepper).
 Analysis:

Such a situation at quarterback could finally drive the team to give Smith a real workload in the running game. He's a decent starting option against a disappointing Jaguars defense that let Cedric Benson go for 100 yards last week. Smith has scored in three of the past five games. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Dan Orlovsky QB, Detroit Lions 11/08/08, Time: 11:50 am
 Status:
Out
News: Coach Rod Marinelli finally announced on Friday that Orlovsky will miss Sunday's game against Jacksonville. He did not, however, reveal who will start in Orlovsky's place.
 Analysis:

It's silly that Marinelli thinks his team will gain some advantage by keeping the Jags guessing about whether they'll have to defend against Daunte Culpepper or Drew Stanton. If the team really doesn't know yet who will start, there'd be no harm in saying that. As for Orlovsky, we might find out later in the week if he'll be done for the year. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Mike Furrey WR, Detroit Lions 11/05/08, Time: 3:45 pm
News: Furrey had four catches for 40 yards in Week 9 in Chicago and has gotten some of the passes that were thrown to Roy Williams before he was traded to Dallas.
 Analysis:

Furrey will also benefit from the addition of Culpepper. He has always had the ability to run good routes and keep the chains moving. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Calvin Johnson WR, Detroit Lions 11/05/08, Time: 3:43 pm
News: Johnson has a touchdown in four straight games and seems oblivious to the revolving door that has become the QB position in Detroit. He is a must-play in any format.
 Analysis:

Johnson could benefit greatly from the addition of Culpepper to the Lions offense. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Daunte Culpepper QB, Detroit Lions 11/05/08, Time: 3:42 pm
News: Culpepper passed his physical on Tuesday and is officially a Lion. He could make his first start as early as this week against Jacksonville.
 Analysis:

A Culpepper to Calvin Johnson hook-up is what everyone in Detroit is expecting. Remember, this is a winless team playing a tough Jacksonville pass defense so be cautious if you consider starting him in Week 10. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Dan Orlovsky QB, Detroit Lions 11/03/08, Time: 8:41 pm
 Status:
Questionable
News: FoxSports.com's Jay Glazer reports that Orlovsky will be out indefinitely with a sprained thumb on his throwing hand. The Detroit Free Press, however, points out that Orlovsky played all of Sunday's game with the injury and reports that the player expects to be on the field in Week 10.
 Analysis:

We'll see what's true as the weekend approaches. At the very least, though, it appears that we can forget about Orlovsky as a potential sleeper against a bad Jacksonville defense. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Marvin Harrison WR, Indianapolis Colts 11/03/08, Time: 12:41 pm
 Status:
Cold
News: Harrison caught four passes for 50 yards in the Sunday night victory but failed to score for the third straight game and the fourth time in five games.
 Analysis:

Harrison is no better than a candidate for a No. 3 fantasy receiver slot each week. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Anthony Gonzalez WR, Indianapolis Colts 11/03/08, Time: 12:39 pm
News: Gonzalez caught four passes for 55 yards Sunday night, including both of Peyton Manning's touchdown tosses. They were the second-year receiver's first two scores of the season.
 Analysis:

Those of us who drafted Gonzalez as insurance for Marvin Harrison are now stuck with the weekly crapshoot between the two, trying to guess which (if either) might find the end zone. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Reggie Wayne WR, Indianapolis Colts 11/03/08, Time: 12:37 pm
News: Despite heading into the game questionable with a bad knee, Wayne started and led Colts receivers with five catches and 65 yards.
 Analysis:

The lack of touchdowns kept it from being a productive fantasy night, but he's a weekly starter nonetheless. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Joseph Addai RB, Indianapolis Colts 11/03/08, Time: 12:35 pm
News: Addai returned to the lineup Sunday night, carrying 17 times for 32 yards and catching two passes for 10 more. He had missed the previous two games with a hamstring injury.
 Analysis:

The weak numbers should have been expected against New England's tough front seven. Addai will have another tough matchup in Week 10 against Pittsburgh. Nevertheless, his fantasy owners should be happy to have him back well in advance of the playoffs. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Peyton Manning QB, Indianapolis Colts 11/03/08, Time: 12:32 pm
News: Manning hit on 21 of 29 passes Sunday night, for 254 yards and two touchdowns.
 Analysis:

That's more like it. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Shaun McDonald WR, Detroit Lions 11/02/08, Time: 6:06 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: McDonald has his second consecutive decent game. He caught a second quarter TD pass and ended up with six catches for 65 yards.
 Analysis:

I am not saying that you should run out and spend all of your waiver wire funds on McDonald, but he does have 11 catches for 133 yards and a TD in the last two games. You could do worse. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Calvin Johnson WR, Detroit Lions 11/02/08, Time: 6:04 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Johnson ran his games with TD's streak to four. He had eight catches for 96 yards.
 Analysis:

It's pretty clear that Johnson can perform with even the worst QB. Just imagine if he had a decent QB tossing the ball to him... He has six TD's on the season with 29 catches for 588 yards (20.3 ypc). (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Kevin Smith RB, Detroit Lions 11/02/08, Time: 6:02 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Smith scored a TD on an early second quarter plunge and had 37 yards on 14 carries.
 Analysis:

The 14 carries represent Smith's high since Week 1 and he may finally be wresting the job away from Rudy Johnson. Smith has four TD's this season and 22 receptions. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Dan Orlovsky QB, Detroit Lions 11/02/08, Time: 6:00 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Orlovsky was on his way to a career game against the Bears before reality caught up to him. He threw two second quarter TD's, but ended up with two interceptions and just 28-for-47.
 Analysis:

As long as Calvin Johnson is on the field, Orlovsky has minimal value. I wouldn't start him - ever, but there are some leagues - maybe those that start three QB's (which I have never heard of) in which he could have value. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Reggie Wayne WR, Indianapolis Colts 11/02/08, Time: 1:28 pm
News: Reggie Wayne says he'll play against the Patriots tonight. He was limited all week by a knee injury. (SportsBuff.com)
Player: Daunte Culpepper QB, Detroit Lions 11/02/08, Time: 5:44 am
News: Multiple sources report that Daunte Culpepper signed a two-year deal with the Lions on Saturday. He eschewed a meeting with the Chiefs earlier in the week for a "better opportunity" elsewhere, which appartently ended up being Detroit. Kansas City is down to starting its third-string quarterback, Tyler Thigpen, so we can only assume that the Lions offered Culpepper the chance to start. The potential combination of Culpepper to Calvin Johnson makes him worth stashing on a deep fantasy bench, but don't get too excited a drop a player you might need for him. (SportsBuff.com)
Player: Reggie Wayne WR, Indianapolis Colts 10/31/08, Time: 8:05 pm
 Status:
Questionable
News: The knee injury that limited Wayne in practice this week has him listed as questionable for the Sunday night game against New England. He'll reportedly be a game-time decision.
 Analysis:

The fact that game time doesn't come until about 8:15 that night means that fantasy owners will either have to gamble that he'll be available or risk missing his numbers by going ahead and using someone else. For what it's worth, ESPN's John Clayton says the fact that Wayne was "out there trying to do some things" in practice is a bit encouraging. He wouldn't be the first guy to do some practicing and then miss the game, though. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Bob Sanders DB, Indianapolis Colts 10/30/08, Time: 6:17 am
 Status:
Questionable
News: According to The Associated Press, Coach Tony Dungy expects to have Sanders back on the field Sunday night, barring any setbacks to his sprained ankle in practice.
 Analysis:

Sanders has been out since Week 2 but probably wouldn't take too long to round back into valuable IDP form once he returns. It might not hurt to try to wait a week before playing him, but if he's your best option, he's worth a shot. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Joseph Addai RB, Indianapolis Colts 10/30/08, Time: 6:15 am
 Status:
Questionable
News: The Associated Press reports that, barring any setback in practice, Coach Tony Dungy expects Addai to return this week against New England.
 Analysis:

The Patriots have not allowed a rushing touchdown since Week 3, so Addai might not be all that strong a fantasy play even if he does return this week. If you can, wait to see him in action before returning him to your lineup. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Joseph Addai RB, Indianapolis Colts 10/29/08, Time: 9:42 am
News: Addai has an injury that will leave him questionable for this weekends game.
 Analysis:

Coach Tony Dungy did not give any further insight other than to say Addai is questionable.

Player: Peyton Manning QB, Indianapolis Colts 10/29/08, Time: 9:40 am
News: With speculation about his arm being injured, Colts GM Bill Polian refuted that notion saying Peyton is fine.
 Analysis:

Fine or not Peyton and the Colts aren't fine this year and with the Titans at 7-0 the Colts could be looking at the Wild Card if that. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Bob Sanders DB, Indianapolis Colts 10/28/08, Time: 9:56 am
 Status:
Questionable
News: Despite being upgraded to questionable for Week 8, Sanders was once again deactivated.
 Analysis:

The safety appears to be nearing a return, but IDP owners should probably wait until he completes a game before putting him back into fantasy lineups. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Gary Brackett LB, Indianapolis Colts 10/28/08, Time: 9:53 am
News: Brackett led all players with nine solo tackles in the Colts' Monday night loss to Tennessee.
 Analysis:

Brackett continues to be a good IDP option. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Dallas Clark TE, Indianapolis Colts 10/28/08, Time: 9:46 am
 Status:
Hot
News: Clark led all players with 94 receiving yards on Monday night to go with seven catches and two touchdowns.
 Analysis:

That, folks, is why you just pick a tight end and leave him alone. Clark went into the Monday night game with no touchdowns for the season. He has caught 15 passes in the past two games. (SportsBuff.com)
