PLAYER UPDATES Provided By SportsBuff.com
Player: D.J. Hackett WR, Carolina Panthers 09/06/08, Time: 10:59 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Hackett practiced fully again on Friday and will start Sunday at San Diego.
 Analysis:

Hackett should see more balls thrown his way without Steve Smith in the lineup, but will probably also see a lot of Antonio Cromartie. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Rashard Mendenhall RB, Pittsburgh Steelers 09/03/08, Time: 9:28 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Mendenhall will return kicks for the Steelers this season, Coach Mike Tomlin revealed Tuesday.
 Analysis:

Sounds like Mendenhall will be slowly worked into the offense in select spots as well, so keep an eye on his production as playing time increases. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Lawrence Timmons LB, Pittsburgh Steelers 09/02/08, Time: 11:45 am
News: Larry Foote returned to practice on Monday after sitting out since hurting his knee Aug. 23. This likely means Foote will start Sunday's opener.
 Analysis:

Timmons is expected to see time in passing situations, but he was unable to beat out Foote for a starting inside linebacker job in camp. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Larry Foote LB, Pittsburgh Steelers 09/02/08, Time: 11:39 am
 Status:
Probable
News: Foote returned to practice on Monday for the first time since hurting a knee on Aug. 23.
 Analysis:

This means he should fulfill his promise that he'll be ready for the opener. Foote is so far holding off 2007 first-round pick Lawrence Timmons at inside linebacker. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Lawrence Timmons LB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/30/08, Time: 10:23 pm
News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that inside linebacker Larry Foote says his knee isn't bothering him much and that he'll be ready to go for the regular-season opener. That would keep Timmons from making his first pro start.
 Analysis:

I'd still rather draft Timmons. Neither is an early IDP pick or a fantasy starter, so you might as well take a chance on the young guy with more upside. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Larry Foote LB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/30/08, Time: 8:47 pm
 Status:
Probable
News: Foote has told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he'll be ready to play in Week 1 despite a minor knee injury that has caused him to miss some practice time.
 Analysis:

I'd still rather draft Lawrence Timmons late if I'm going to take either one. Foote is a decent player but doesn't offer a whole lot to IDP owners. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Josh McCown QB, Carolina Panthers 08/30/08, Time: 12:59 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Carolina acquired McCown from Miami in exchange for a seventh round draft pick in 2009.
 Analysis:

McCown was brought in when backup Matt Moore was injured in the Panthers' final preseason game. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Charlie Batch QB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/30/08, Time: 12:24 pm
 Status:
Steady Out
News: The Steelers placed Batch on IR, ending his season.
 Analysis:

Batch suffered a broken collarbone in the Steelers' first preseason game. The team signed Byron Leftwich soon thereafter. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: D.J. Hackett WR, Carolina Panthers 08/28/08, Time: 3:12 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Hackett missed practice again Wednesday and is not expected to play in the Panthers final preseason game Thursday night.
 Analysis:

Hackett has missed all of the preseason with an injury to his toe and may not be in the starting lineup for Week 1. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Charlie Batch QB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/28/08, Time: 3:04 pm
 Status:
Out
News: There is growing speculation that Batch could be placed on IR this season because of his shoulder injury so the Steelers don't waste a roster spot, according to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)
Player: D.J. Hackett WR, Carolina Panthers 08/27/08, Time: 7:13 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Hackett is expected to be back at practice soon after missing most of the preseason with an injured toe.
 Analysis:

Hackett could even be ready to start in Week 1, and with Steve Smith out of the lineup for the first two weeks, he'd probably be a welcome target for Jake Delhomme. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Chris Harris DB, Carolina Panthers 08/26/08, Time: 8:21 pm
News: Harris returned to practice on Monday after missing time with a groin injury.
 Analysis:

The starting strong safety should be safe to draft in IDP leagues, but don't expect him to match last year's league-leading forced-fumble total. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Lawrence Timmons LB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/26/08, Time: 8:13 pm
News: A bum knee could keep starting inside linebacker Larry Foote out of the first regular-season game. If that is the case, Timmons would start in his place.
 Analysis:

That would give Timmons a chance to win the job he's been rumored to be reaching for all off-season. Timmons is much younger, faster and more athletic but has been unable to unseat the veteran in camp. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Troy Polamalu DB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/26/08, Time: 8:10 pm
News: The Beaver County Times reports that Polamalu is expected to play in the team's final exhibition game. He had been limited by a strained hamstring.
 Analysis:

Any action for Polamalu is good news, as it would indicate that he'll be on the field once the games begin to count. Go ahead and draft him, but pick up some late insurance. He's had big injury troubles in recent seasons. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Larry Foote LB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/26/08, Time: 8:07 pm
 Status:
Doubtful
News: The Beaver County Times reports that a knee injury could keep Foote out of the regular-season opener.
 Analysis:

If it does, second-year linebacker Lawrence Timmons could get a chance to steal the starting inside job for good, a change which has been rumored throughout the off-season anyway. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Samie Parker WR, Carolina Panthers 08/26/08, Time: 7:58 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: One day after being released by Denver, Parker was picked up by Carolina. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)
Player: James Farrior LB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/21/08, Time: 10:41 am
News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Farrior will sign a four-year extension today to keep him with the Steelers through 2012.
 Analysis:

That should mean the 33-year-old will finish his career in Pittsburgh, which not too many Steeler linebackers have done for a while. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Troy Polamalu DB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/20/08, Time: 7:31 pm
News: Polamalu finally came off the PUP list and joined his teammates on the practice field for the first time on Tuesday. Sporting News Today reports that he was tentative, though.
 Analysis:

Polamalu's struggles with injuries over the past two seasons make him a risky IDP selection. You can afford to take a shot on such a player in most leagues, because there tends to be a very deep pool, but know what to expect if you draft him. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Ken Lucas DB, Carolina Panthers 08/17/08, Time: 9:57 pm
News: Lucas returned to the field Saturday for the first time after having his face partially broken by teammate Steve Smith. The two even lined up against each other without issue.
 Analysis:

The Panthers would be fine without Lucas, as there seems to be little difference among their top three corners. He can be a decent IDP at times, though, so his relatively quick return after surgery is helpful. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Troy Polamalu DB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/16/08, Time: 10:15 pm
 Status:
Out
News: Polamalu remains on the physically unable to perform list with a hamstring injury that has kept him out throughout camp.
 Analysis:

Polamalu has to fall way down IDP draft lists when you consider the current injury and the fact that he missed eight games over the past two seasons. The only thing keeping him draft worthy is that there are so many players available in most leagues, you can generally find a replacement when needed on the wire. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Byron Leftwich QB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/16/08, Time: 12:10 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Leftwich completed 4 of 11 passes for 41 yards against Buffalo Thursday.
 Analysis:

Leftwich had just two practices with the Steelers before seeing time in the second preseason game. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Thomas Davis LB, Carolina Panthers 08/14/08, Time: 11:06 pm
News: Davis told the Gaston Gazette: "I definitely feel like this is going to be best year by far. So watch out."
 Analysis:

Davis has moved to the weakside after beginning his starting time on the strong side. His numbers should certainly take a big turn upward in 2008. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Casey Hampton DT, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/11/08, Time: 7:12 pm
News: Hampton has apparently lost enough weight to return to the practice field. He began camp on the physically unable to perform list after showing up too large for his head coach's liking.
 Analysis:

It's not the slightest bit surprising to see him become available earlier than later. The Steelers defense would take a big hit if it were missing him. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: DeAngelo Williams RB, Carolina Panthers 08/11/08, Time: 1:44 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: The Rock Hill (S.C.) Herald reports that offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson of the Panthers feels that Williams has become a "major player on our offense."
 Analysis:

With Jonathan Stewart slow to heal fully from his toe surgery, Williams is seizing the moment and taking advantage of his practice and game load. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Steve Smith WR, Carolina Panthers 08/11/08, Time: 1:38 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Smtih was held out of practice Monday after suffering a concussion in Saturday's preseason win over the Colts.
 Analysis:

Don't be surprised to see Smith not play against Philadelphia Thursday night, either. He should be fine when the regular season rolls around, considering he's got an extra two weeks to heal from his wounds. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Charlie Batch QB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/11/08, Time: 1:24 pm
 Status:
Out
News: Batch is having surgery on his broken collarbone Monday and is expected out at least six weeks.
 Analysis:

Six weeks is generous. Batch is 33 and this could be the end of the line. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Charlie Batch QB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/09/08, Time: 7:55 am
 Status:
Out
News: Batch broke his collarbone in the preseason opener against Philadelphia and will likely miss the entire 2008 season.
 Analysis:

Hello, Dennis Dixon. The Steelers will also be in the market for another QB. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Rashard Mendenhall RB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/09/08, Time: 7:53 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Playing against the Eagles first team defense, Mendenhall had seven carries for 34 yards in the Steelers preseason opener Friday. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)
Player: Jonathan Stewart RB, Carolina Panthers 08/07/08, Time: 9:33 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Stewart has still not been able to practice in 11 on 11 drills at camp with the Panthers.
 Analysis:

Stewart's toe is still sore after having surgery on if over five months ago. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Willie Parker RB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/06/08, Time: 12:55 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Coach Mike Tomlin told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Parker could see action in goal-line situations this season.
 Analysis:

Parker did not hold that role in 2007 because Tomlin was worried about the punishment Parker would take in getting hit in short-yardage situations. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Ben Roethlisberger QB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/06/08, Time: 12:38 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Roethlisberger is expected to start and play one series in the Steelers' preseason opener Friday night. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)
Player: Steve Smith WR, Carolina Panthers 08/04/08, Time: 7:13 am
 Status:
Cold
News: Smith will resume practicing with the Panthers Monday after being sent home over the weekend following the fight he got into with teammate Ken Lucas.
 Analysis:

Smith apologized to the team in a meeting Sunday night, but he's still suspended for the first two games of the season. He'll come back in time for Week 3 vs. Minnesota. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Ben Roethlisberger QB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/03/08, Time: 9:56 am
 Status:
Probable
News: Roethlisberger was held out of all team activities Saturday with the exception of 7-on-7 drills with a sore groin.
 Analysis:

We'll bypass any reference to camp being very lonely and just say that the Steelers don't think the problem is serious and aren't willling to take a chance on the injury progressing. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Lawrence Timmons LB, Pittsburgh Steelers 08/02/08, Time: 10:54 pm
News: Timmons got some extra first-team reps this week as James Farrior missed time with a hip flexor injury.
 Analysis:

Larry Foote reportedly moved over to Farrior's spot, but Timmons manning Foote's role. The second-year linebacker is still battling Foote for a starting job. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Steve Smith WR, Carolina Panthers 08/02/08, Time: 11:50 am
 Status:
Cold
News: Coach John Fox of the Panthers announced that Smith will be suspended for the first two games of the season after his altercation with CD Ken Lucas Friday during training camp.
 Analysis:

Ouch. This takes away a primary weapon in the Panthers offense. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: D.J. Hackett WR, Carolina Panthers 08/01/08, Time: 8:01 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Hackett has been used in the slot primarily thus far in Panthers camp and continues to share first team reps with Muhsin Muhammad in that role. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)
Player: Jeff King TE, Carolina Panthers 07/30/08, Time: 6:07 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: King has been practicing with the first team on offense during camp.
 Analysis:

Considering they demoted him during minicamps, this is good news. King's numbers went down when Jake Delhomme got hurt last year, so expect a jump. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: DeAngelo Williams RB, Carolina Panthers 07/30/08, Time: 6:05 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Williams has been practicing with the first team offense thus far in camp for the Panthers.
 Analysis:

First round pick Jonathan Stewart will get his reps as well, but he's still not 100 percent healed from toe surgery. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Julius Peppers DE, Carolina Panthers 07/29/08, Time: 7:55 am
 Status:
Hot
News: According to Sporting News Today, Panthers left tackle Jordan Gross says that Peppers is bigger, stronger and quicker at this point than he was last season. "I think he's going to have his best year ever," Gross was quoted as saying. "He's better than I've ever seen him."
 Analysis:

The star end, of course, slumped to 2.5 sacks last season, but the guy trying to block him in practice is gushing about the type of season that lies ahead. We've certainly seen what Peppers can do, so go ahead and push him back up near the top of the line rankings. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Troy Polamalu DB, Pittsburgh Steelers 07/28/08, Time: 7:45 pm
News: Polamalu has landed on the physically unable to perform list with a hamstring strain.
 Analysis:

The hope was that his altered off-season workout regimen would stave off the recent injury woes. Although this could be a byproduct of his strenuous schedule, it's disheartening for camp to start off like this for a player who has missed eight games over the past two seasons. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Terrence Holt DB, Carolina Panthers 07/28/08, Time: 7:47 am
News: Holt is working behind rookie Charles Godfrey at free safety in camp so far. The veteran came over from Arizona in the off-season.
 Analysis:

Holt has been an average starter at best in Detroit and Arizona, so the rookie offers greater upside. It'll be no loss to not have Torry's little brother as an IDP candidate. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Charles Godfrey DB, Carolina Panthers 07/28/08, Time: 7:38 am
News: Sporting News Today's Carolina correspondent reports that the team expects Godfrey to start at free safety.
 Analysis:

The third-round pick played corner and safety in college. Although he brings good speed, he was said to struggle in man coverage at Iowa. The Panthers signed former Arizona and Detroit starter Terrence Holt in the off-season, but Godfrey would present greater upside. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Casey Hampton DT, Pittsburgh Steelers 07/28/08, Time: 7:26 am
News: Sporting News Today's Pittsburgh correspondent reports that Hampton has landed on the physically unable to perform list because he showed up so overweight and out of shape. The All-Pro nose tackle completed just five of seven 100-yard runs on the first day of practice.
 Analysis:

Hampton says he'll be ready to go by the regular season. Although Mike Tomlin is angry now, he'll realize that Hampton has to start in the middle. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: D.J. Hackett WR, Carolina Panthers 07/28/08, Time: 6:44 am
News: Hackett and Muhsin Muhammad will split reps during training camp.
 Analysis:

Hackett isn't as good a blocker as Muhammad, so he may be better suited to see more time in passing situations. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Landon Johnson LB, Carolina Panthers 07/27/08, Time: 8:24 pm
News: Johnson will still battle Na'il Diggs for a starting job, but the Charlotte Observer reports that job will now be on the strong side instead of the weak.
 Analysis:

If Johnson wins out, the move probably takes him out of fantasy consideration. The strongside player doesn't tend to get as many clear opportunities as the weakside guy. Johnson hasn't been a real strong IDP anyway, though, so it's no big loss. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Na 'il Diggs LB, Carolina Panthers 07/27/08, Time: 8:13 pm
News: The Charlotte Observer reports that the Panthers have switched Diggs and Thomas Davis, moving Diggs to the strong side. He'll compete with free-agent addition Landon Johnson for the starting gig.
 Analysis:

This is a good move for fantasy players, as Diggs hasn't been much of an IDP option anyway. Johnsonn is a bit stronger in fantasy but still nothing special. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Thomas Davis LB, Carolina Panthers 07/27/08, Time: 8:09 pm
News: The Charlotte Observer reports that the Panthers have moved Davis to the weak side after deploying him from the strong side last season.
 Analysis:

The switch should free Davis up to make more big plays with his speed, as the weakside 'backer tends to play in space more often. He should become a much better IDP. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Rashard Mendenhall RB, Pittsburgh Steelers 07/25/08, Time: 4:17 pm
News: Mendenhall agreed to a five-year deal with the Steelers Friday.
 Analysis:

Pittsburgh snagged Mendenhall with the No. 23 pick in the draft. He'll split time with Willie Parker this season, but Mendenhall will ultimately be the featured back. Maybe not this season, but he was drafted for a reason. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Limas Sweed WR, Pittsburgh Steelers 07/25/08, Time: 4:14 pm
News: The Steeler signed Sweed to a four-year deal.
 Analysis:

Sweed figures to see some balls thrown his way in 2008. He'll start as the No. 3 receiver on the depth chart. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: James Farrior LB, Pittsburgh Steelers 07/19/08, Time: 9:06 pm
News: According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Farrior says he wants to stay with the Steelers after his current contract runs out at the end of this season.
 Analysis:

The only way this wouldn't be a good thing for our purposes is if Farrior returns in a reduced role, which he reportedly says he's willing to do. Farrior is 33 and has been a very good IDP since 2001, when he was a Jet. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)
